Chapter 9

Helen’s final move came two days later.

She filed an emergency appeal claiming new evidence of my instability.

She said I had bribed Victor Hale.

She said I had threatened him.

She attached an affidavit from Marcus saying I had offered him money to drop the custody fight.

The judge scheduled an emergency hearing for the next morning.

I spent the night preparing with the lawyers.

We had the recording from Victor.

We had the messages from Thomas Reed.

We had everything.

The hearing was short.

Helen’s lawyer presented the affidavit.

Our lawyer played Victor’s recording of Helen threatening him.

We played Marcus’s old messages where he admitted the abuse.

We showed the bank records proving Helen had paid Marcus to file false claims.

The judge ruled within an hour.

The appeal was denied.

Helen was sanctioned for filing false documents.

Marcus was ordered to pay my legal fees.

Helen stood in the courtroom after the ruling.

Her face was pale.

She looked at me across the room.

For the first time she looked afraid.

Outside she did not speak to the reporters.

She got into a car and left.

I went home to Mia.

My mother and Daniel were waiting.

They had seen the news.

My mother hugged me.

“It is almost over,” she said.

I nodded.

But I knew Helen still had one more card.

She played it that night.

A story appeared online.

It claimed I had hidden my identity to trap Marcus into marriage for his money.

It claimed the Langford acquisition was illegal.

It used old photos and twisted facts.

The story spread fast.

By morning the Langford stock had dropped five percent.

My father called.

“The board is nervous,” he said.

“Some want another vote. Helen is winning the public battle even if she lost in court.”

I looked at Mia sleeping in her bassinet.

“Then we end the public battle,” I said.

I called the reporter who had been fair from the beginning.

I agreed to a full interview.

I sat in my living room with Mia on my lap.

I told the truth.

About the two years.

About the night I was locked out.

About the hidden phone.

About the evidence I had saved.

About why I had hidden my last name.

I did not attack Helen.

I simply told what happened.

The interview ran that evening.

By the next morning the stock had recovered.

Helen’s story was being called out as false by other outlets.

She posted one last message on social media.

It was long and rambling.

She accused everyone of conspiring against her.

She said she would never stop fighting for her son and grandchild.

Then she deleted her account.

That afternoon the lawyers called.

Helen had been arrested.

She had tried to access sealed court documents through a contact in the clerk’s office.

She had been caught on camera.

The charges included attempted theft of sealed records and violation of the protection order.

Marcus called me that night.

His voice was quiet.

“Elena, I am done. Helen is in jail. I have no money left. The court ordered me to pay everything. I just want to see Mia sometimes. Supervised. That is all.”

I thought for a long moment.

“You can see her,” I said.

“After you complete the classes the judge ordered. And only supervised. No Helen. Ever.”

He agreed.

I hung up.

I went to Mia’s room.

She was awake in her crib.

She smiled when she saw me.

I picked her up and held her close.

The house was quiet.

The gates were locked.

But for the first time the quiet felt peaceful.

Helen was in jail.

Marcus was broken.

The company was safe.

My daughter was safe.

I rocked her slowly.

“We did it,” I whispered.

“You are safe now. Really safe.”

She made a small sound and closed her eyes.

I sat in the rocking chair until she fell asleep.

Then I stayed there a little longer.

May you like

Watching her.

Protecting her.
