Chapter 5

The first sign of trouble came on a Tuesday morning.

I was sitting on the porch, drinking tea, when Ethan came out, his face dark.

He handed me his phone.

A tabloid headline blared across the screen.

MILLIONAIRE TECH CEO’S WIFE FAKED ATTACK TO STEAL FORTUNE, SOURCES SAY.

The article was full of lies.

It said I’d been unstable for years.

That I’d attacked Sophia, then hurt myself to frame Daniel.

That my brothers were criminals who’d kidnapped me and forced me to make false statements.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Daniel,” I said.

Ethan nodded.

“His legal team leaked it,” he said. “They’re trying to paint you as the villain. Make the jury think you’re just a gold digger.”

Ryan showed up an hour later, followed by Alexander.

They were both furious.

“We can take them down,” Alexander said. “Release everything we have on Daniel. Ruin him completely.”

I shook my head.

“No,” I said.

All three of them looked at me.

“No?” Ryan said.

“If we do that, it just looks like we’re fighting dirty,” I said. “Like they’re right. We need to do this the right way. The truth is on our side. We just need people to hear it.”

Ethan frowned.

“What do you have in mind?”

I took a deep breath.

“I want to post a video,” I said. “Just me. No lawyers. No scripts. Just the truth.”

They hesitated.

“Liv,” Ethan said. “That’s a lot. You don’t have to—”

“I do,” I said. “For three years, I let Daniel speak for me. I let him tell me what to do, what to say, who to be. Not anymore. This is my story. And I’m going to tell it.”

An hour later, Alexander set up his phone on the kitchen table.

I sat there, no makeup, my hair in a messy braid, wearing one of Ethan’s old hoodies.

My belly was big and round under the fabric.

I held the latest ultrasound photo in my hand.

I looked into the camera.

“My name is Olivia Hale,” I said. “I am seven and a half months pregnant with my first son. Three weeks ago, my husband’s mistress kicked me in the stomach twice while my husband stood there and watched. I almost lost my baby. I almost lost everything.”

My voice shook a little, but I kept going.

“Today, lies about me were published in the press. Lies that say I faked this. That I’m a gold digger. That my family is dangerous. Let me tell you the truth. I left my family three years ago to marry a man I thought loved me. I gave up my career, my friends, every part of who I was to be his wife. And when it mattered most, he let someone hurt me. The only people who showed up for me? The brothers I’d pushed away. They flew across the country in ninety minutes to save me. They’ve held my hand through every doctor’s appointment, every deposition, every sleepless night. They are the best men I know. And I will not let anyone lie about them.”

I held up the ultrasound photo.

“This is my son,” I said. “He is strong. He is a fighter. And I am going to make sure he grows up in a world where people who hurt women and children don’t get away with it. I will not be silent. I will not back down. And I will see justice done.”

I stopped the recording.

My hands were shaking.

Alexander hit post.

Within an hour, the video had a million views.

By the end of the day, it was ten million.

Comments flooded in.

I believe you.

You are so brave.

Your brothers are heroes.

Daniel Hale is a monster.

The tabloids started backtracking.

Their sources dried up.

People saw me.

They saw the truth.

That night, I sat on the couch, reading the comments, as my brothers brought me ice cream.

“You did good, Liv,” Ethan said, pressing a kiss to the top of my head.

I smiled.

For the first time in my life, I felt powerful.

I wasn’t just a victim.

I was a mother.

A sister.

May you like

A fighter.

And no one was ever going to silence me again.
