Story

Chapter 4

Three days passed.

Three of the longest days of my life.

Helen had gone to ground.

No more press conferences.

No more public statements.

Silence.

And silence from Helen was never a good thing.

I spent the days in meetings.

Lawyers.

Accountants.

Acquisition specialists.

People who’d worked for my family for generations.

People who’d been waiting in the shadows for my signal.

Each meeting peeled back another layer of the Langford empire.

And each layer was more rotten than the last.

Embezzlement.

Fraud.

Bribery.

Daniel had been stealing from his own company for years.

Helen had been signing off on it.

The board either knew and looked the other way, or they were too stupid to see what was happening right in front of them.

Either way, they were finished.

On the fourth day, Sarah called.

Her voice was tight.

“Elena, we have a problem.”

I sat up straighter.

“What kind of problem?”

“Daniel filed for divorce this morning. And he’s counter-suing for full custody of the baby.”

I felt my blood run cold.

“On what grounds?”

“Infidelity.”

I blinked.

“Infidelity? I haven’t so much as looked at another man since the day I married him.”

“I know. But he has… evidence. Photos. Text messages. Hotel receipts. All dated within the last six months. All apparently showing you with another man.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it? Think, Elena. Did you ever go anywhere alone? Any business trips? Any meetings you didn’t tell him about?”

My mind raced.

Of course I had.

Dozens of times.

Secret meetings with my team.

Trips to set up shell companies.

Visits to this very penthouse.

I’d always told Daniel I was visiting a friend or going to a conference.

He’d never questioned it.

Or so I’d thought.

“He followed me,” I whispered. “All this time. He was following me.”

“Looks like it. And he’s been busy. He’s manufactured an entire affair. Faked the texts. Paid someone to pose with you in photos. It’s convincing, Elena. Really convincing. If we don’t pick it apart, a judge will believe it.”

I stood up and paced.

That bastard.

That clever, cruel bastard.

He’d been planning this as long as I had.

Maybe longer.

“Can we prove it’s fake?”

“Working on it. But it’ll take time. And Helen’s already leaked the story to the press. It’ll be everywhere by tonight. ‘Pregnant socialite Elena Langford caught in torrid affair while husband grieves at home.’”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The perfect counter.

Helen’s “abuse” narrative was destroyed.

So they’d replaced it with something worse.

The cheating wife.

The unstable mother.

The woman who’d betrayed poor, innocent Daniel.

And the public would eat it up.

Because people loved to hate the woman who’d fallen from grace.

“Release the next clip,” I said.

“Elena, are you sure? The full video of the attack. It’s… brutal.”

“I’m sure. Release it. Every second. The slap. The shove. The crack of my head hitting the wall. All of it. And attach the police report I filed yesterday. The hospital photos of my injuries. Everything.”

Sarah hesitated.

“That’ll escalate this to war. There’s no coming back from that.”

“Sarah,” I said, my voice ice cold. “We’ve been at war since the day he slammed me into that wall. Now release the damn video.”

“On it.”

She hung up.

I threw my phone onto the couch.

Hard.

Infidelity.

Of all the low, dirty tricks.

I walked to the window.

The city was bustling below.

Oblivious.

And somewhere out there, Daniel and Helen were celebrating.

They thought they’d won.

They thought they’d finally found the weapon to destroy me.

They had no idea I had an armory.

An hour later, the video dropped.

And the internet broke.

Millions of views in the first hour.

Tens of millions by the end of the day.

People watched in horror as Daniel raised his hand.

As I fell back.

As my head cracked against the plaster.

As Helen walked in and calmly told him not to mark my face.

The reaction was instantaneous.

Global.

Furious.

#JusticeForElena was trending worldwide.

Women shared their own stories.

Men called for Daniel’s arrest.

Langford Group stock plummeted twenty percent in a single afternoon.

And the “affair” story?

Dead on arrival.

No one cared about fake texts when they’d watched a six-month-pregnant woman get thrown into a wall.

Sarah called back, laughing through her tears.

“You did it. It’s over. The affair story is buried. Every network is leading with the video. Daniel’s been called in for police questioning. Helen’s been asked to step down from three different charities. We’ve won, Elena. We’ve actually won.”

But I didn’t feel like I’d won.

I felt cold.

Because I knew Helen.

And this wasn’t over.

“Sarah,” I said quietly. “Pull the team together. All of them. I want a full security review. I want eyes on Daniel. Eyes on Helen. Eyes on every member of that family. If they so much as buy a toothbrush, I want to know about it.”

The laughter died in her throat.

“You think they’ll try something else?”

“I know they will. Helen doesn’t lose. She just changes tactics. And right now, she’s looking for the one thing that can hurt me more than anything else.”

I placed my hand on my stomach.

The baby.

She’d come for the baby.

I was sure of it.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying every conversation.

Every threat.

Every cold look.

And then my phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

I opened it.

A photo.

My blood turned to ice.

It was me.

Taken from across the street.

Standing at the penthouse window.

I’d been there less than ten minutes earlier.

Another text.

We know where you are.

Another.

You can run, Elena. But you can’t hide our grandchild forever.

I jumped out of bed and ran to the window.

Peered through the curtains.

The street below was dark.

Quiet.

Empty.

But they’d been there.

They’d found me.

I grabbed my phone and called security.

“Someone was outside. They took photos. I want a full sweep of the building. Now. And double the guards. No one gets in or out without my explicit permission.”

“On it, Ms. Carter.”

I hung up.

My hands were shaking so hard I could barely hold the phone.

They’d found me.

In three days.

Despite the false names.

Despite the private building.

Despite the layers of security.

Helen had found me.

And now the real game began.

I paced the room.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

What was I missing?

How had she tracked me so fast?

And then it hit me.

The family.

I’d been so focused on Daniel and Helen.

I’d forgotten the rest of them.

Daniel’s sister.

His brother.

Aunts.

Uncles.

Cousins.

Dozens of them.

All bound by the Langford name.

All bound by money.

And one of them had talked.

One of them had known.

Because I’d made a mistake.

A terrible, stupid mistake.

Three days before I left, I’d met Daniel’s favorite cousin, Lisa, for coffee.

I’d been careful.

So careful.

But I’d been upset.

And I’d said too much.

I’d hinted that I had resources.

That I wouldn’t be helpless forever.

And Lisa…

Lisa had always been Helen’s spy.

I’d known it.

Deep down.

But I’d wanted to believe that someone in that family was decent.

That someone would choose right over wrong.

I’d been wrong.

The door burst open.

Two security guards rushed in.

“Clear, Ms. Carter. No one in the building. But we found tire tracks in the alley. Fresh. And a discarded camera lens cap. They were here.”

I nodded.

“Thank you. Post someone outside my door all night. And get me everything you have on Lisa. Every text. Every call. Every bank deposit for the last year. I want to know exactly when Helen bought her.”

They left.

I locked the door behind them.

Slid the deadbolt home.

And slid down to the floor.

I wrapped my arms around my stomach.

They were close.

Too close.

And Helen was playing for keeps now.

The video had wounded her.

The stock collapse had crippled her.

And now she had nothing left to lose.

I didn’t know what she would do next.

But I knew it would be worse than anything I’d imagined.

Because Helen Langford didn’t fight fair.

She fought to kill.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness, she was already loading her next weapon.

One that would strike at the very heart of who I was.
