Chapter 9

Leo was six weeks old when Mom sent another message.

I’ve been doing everything my therapist says. I’ve been working on myself. If you’re ever comfortable… I’d like to apologize to Lila properly. In person. Just to say what I need to say. No pressure.

We talked about it for two days.

“I don’t want to fight,” Lila said. “I don’t want her in our house yet. But… I think I need to hear her say it. To close that chapter.”

We agreed to meet at Aunt Sarah’s house. Just the three of us. No one else.

When we walked in, Mom stood up straight. She held her hands folded in front of her.

She looked at Lila, not at me.

“I am so deeply sorry,” she said clearly. “I hurt you. I lied about you. I tried to control both of you because I was selfish and afraid. You never deserved any of it. You are a good mother. And you deserve all the happiness my son can give you.”

Lila watched her for a long moment. Then she nodded.

“Thank you,” she said. “It won’t fix everything overnight. But I believe you mean it.”

Mom wiped her eyes. “I don’t expect to be forgiven right away. I just want to earn your trust back, slowly, if you’ll let me.”

We didn’t hug. We didn’t make big promises. But the heavy wall between us felt just a little thinner.

Before we left, Mom looked at the carrier in my arms.

“Can I… can I just see him?” she asked softly.

I lifted the blanket. Leo blinked and stretched.

She smiled through her tears. “He’s perfect.”
