Chapter 13

Lily was 15 when she got her first boyfriend.

His name was Noah. Sweet. Quiet. Played the guitar. Got straight A’s. Brought her flowers on their first date.

Daniel was not okay.

He cleaned his guns. Polished his baseball bat. Sat on the porch swing when Noah came to pick her up. Stared at him. Didn’t say a word. Just crossed his arms. Glared.

Lily was mortified.

“Daddy!” she said. “Stop! You’re embarrassing me!”

Noah was nervous. Shook Daniel’s hand so hard his knuckles turned white. Promised he’d have her home by 9. Promised he’d treat her right. Promised he’d never hurt her.

Daniel just nodded. Kept glaring.

They went to the movies. Lily came home 10 minutes early. Grinning. Said it was the best night ever.

Daniel waited up for her. Sat on the couch. Tried to act casual.

“Did he… behave?” he said.

Lily rolled her eyes. Laughed.

“Yes, Daddy,” she said. “He held my hand. That’s it. We’re 15. Relax.”

Daniel sighed. Relieved.

“Good,” he said. “Good.”

He still sat on the porch every time Noah came over. For the next two years.

Lily never complained. She knew. She understood.

That year, we celebrated 10 years as a family.

We had a big party. Everyone came. All the people who’d helped us along the way. Detective Martinez, now a captain. Karen, retired from the adoption agency. Dr. Hale. Mia and Zoe and their families. All the kids from the support group. Lily’s soccer team. Her friends. Noah.

We had a big cake. It said 10 YEARS OF LOVE.

Lily gave a speech. Stood up in front of everyone. Confident. Strong.

“Ten years ago, I was a scared little girl hiding under a dining table,” she said. “I thought no one would ever love me. I thought I’d never be safe. But then these two amazing people chose me. They loved me. They fought for me. They never gave up on me. And because of them, I stand here today. Brave. Loved. Safe.

“To everyone here who helped us along the way—thank you. You are our family too. And to any kid out there who’s scared right now, who thinks no one cares—listen to me. There is hope. There is love. There are people who will fight for you. You just have to hold on. Just a little longer. Your people are coming. I promise.”

The whole room stood up. Cheered. Clapped. Cried.

I looked at Daniel. He was crying. Smiling. Proud.

We’d done good.

Really good.

That summer, we took a big trip. All the way to Disney World.

Lily was 15. Too old for Disney, she said. Too cool.

But I saw her. When we walked into Magic Kingdom and saw Cinderella’s Castle, her face lit up. Just like when she was 7.

She rode every roller coaster. Screamed her head off. Bought a pair of Minnie Mouse ears. Wore them the whole time. Took a million photos. Ate a turkey leg the size of her head.

We stayed for a week. Left exhausted. Happy. Full of memories.

On the plane ride home, Lily fell asleep with her head on my shoulder. Her Minnie ears askew.

I stroked her hair. Thought about the little girl who’d hidden under our table. Who’d been so scared she couldn’t speak. Who’d thought she’d never be loved.

Look at her now.

Strong. Brave. Kind. Loved by everyone who knew her.

She’d turned all that pain into light. Into hope. Into love.

And she was just getting started.
