Chapter 19

Hope was 7 when we had the big ceremony.

20 years to the day since Lily had screamed under our dining table.

We had it in the backyard. Under the oak tree. Next to the treehouse.

Everyone came. All the people who’d been part of our journey. All the kids whose lives we’d saved. All the families who’d found hope because of us.

Hundreds of people.

We unveiled a plaque. Mounted on the big oak tree. Right next to the safe house sign.

It said:

ON THIS SPOT, 20 YEARS AGO, A LITTLE GIRL SCREAMED FOR HELP.

A FAMILY HEARD HER.

THEY FOUGHT FOR HER.

THEY LOVED HER.

THEY BROKE THE CYCLE.

AND BECAUSE OF THEM, THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN ARE NOW SAFE. LOVED. BRAVE.

MAY THIS TREE STAND FOREVER AS A REMINDER:

NO MATTER HOW DARK THE NIGHT, THE COURAGE STAR ALWAYS SHINES.

LOVE CONQUERS ALL.

Lily spoke. Held Hope’s hand.

“20 years ago, I was that little girl,” she said. “Scared. Alone. Convinced no one would ever love me. Convinced I’d never be safe. But then my mom and dad heard me. They chose me. They fought for me. They loved me back to life.

“Today, I stand here as a doctor. A wife. A mom. A woman who has dedicated her life to making sure no other child ever feels the way I did that night. And I’m here to tell you: if you are scared right now, if you are hurting, if you think no one cares—hold on. Help is coming. Love is coming. Your courage star is waiting.

“To my mom and dad: thank you. For everything. I love you more than all the stars in the sky.”

Everyone cheered. Cried. Clapped.

Then Hope stepped forward. Only 7 years old. Brave. Loud.

“I’m gonna be just like my mommy,” she said. “I’m gonna help kids too. And I’m gonna be brave. Just like her. Just like Grandma and Grandpa.”

The crowd cheered louder.

Daniel and I cried. Held each other tight.

We’d done it.

We’d really done it.

That night, after everyone left, we sat on the porch. Just the five of us. Lily, Noah, Hope. Daniel and me.

Hope was asleep on Lily’s lap. Tired from all the excitement.

“Remember when you thought we’d never be happy again?” Lily said. Soft. To us.

I nodded.

“I remember,” I said.

“Look at us now,” she said. Smiled.

I looked at my family.

My husband of 27 years. My rock. My love. The man who’d fought for us all.

My daughter. Brave. Strong. Kind. A hero to so many.

My son-in-law. Good. Kind. Perfect for her.

My granddaughter. Bright. Happy. Loved. Safe. The future.

I thought about all the people who’d tried to break us. Mark. The system. The lies. The fear.

They’d failed.

Because love was stronger.

Hope was stronger.

We were stronger.

Daniel squeezed my hand. Kissed my temple.

“I love you,” he said. Quiet. For only me to hear.

“I love you too,” I said.

The courage star shone bright through the oak tree leaves.

Everything was perfect.

May you like

Everything was whole.

And we had forever.
