Chapter 6

Helen’s campaign got louder every day.

She posted twice on the day of the press conference announcement.

One video showed her and Diane sitting on Helen’s couch, both of them looking exhausted.

“Claire is trying to erase Diane from the family,” Helen said. “She’s using money and lawyers to silence the truth. We just want Noah to be safe.”

The comments filled up fast.

Some people defended me.

Most didn’t.

They said I seemed cold in the videos.

They said Diane looked heartbroken.

They said single moms sometimes snap under pressure.

I didn’t respond to any of it.

I had a company to run and a son to protect.

That afternoon my head of security finished the sweep of the house.

He found three hidden cameras.

One in the living room.

One in the kitchen.

One in my bedroom.

All of them had been installed while I was at work.

All of them pointed at places where I used my laptop.

He also found a small device plugged into the back of the old desktop in the study.

A keylogger.

Diane had been watching everything.

Or at least trying to.

I had the devices removed and destroyed.

Then I changed every password again.

Noah came home from preschool and ran straight to his room.

He came back holding a piece of paper.

It was another drawing.

This one showed our house with a big red X over it.

He had written “BAD AUNTIE” at the bottom.

I knelt down and hugged him.

“We’re not going to let the bad auntie win,” I told him.

He nodded against my shoulder.

That night I put him to bed early.

Then I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop and the Langford files.

The deal was three days away from closing.

Everything was in place.

Except for one thing.

Diane had contacted a competitor of Langford Group.

She had used the forged will to claim she had authority over my affairs.

She offered to sell them information about the acquisition if they paid her.

The competitor had recorded the call and sent it to my lawyer.

I listened to the recording twice.

Diane’s voice was clear.

She sounded confident.

She sounded like she believed she was about to come into a lot of money.

When the recording ended I sat in the dark kitchen for a long time.

She wasn’t just trying to steal the house anymore.

She was trying to destroy the one thing I had built that could never be taken from Noah.

My company.

My legacy.

The future I had planned while she was busy drugging me.

I called my lawyer at eleven o’clock at night.

“File the criminal charges tomorrow morning,” I told him. “Fraud. Forgery. Attempted theft of trade secrets. Child endangerment. Everything.”

He was quiet for a second.

“That will make this very public, Claire.”

“It already is. Helen made sure of that. Now we finish it properly.”

The next morning the charges were filed.

The news picked it up within hours.

“Local Woman Accused of Drugging Sister and Forging Documents to Steal Custody and Business Assets.”

Helen posted immediately.

She called it a smear campaign.

She said Diane was being attacked because she was the good sister.

She said I was using my “new money” to destroy the family.

I still didn’t respond.

Instead I went to the office for the first time in weeks.

My assistant had kept everything running.

When I walked in, people stared.

Some whispered.

I ignored it.

I had a meeting with the Langford team that afternoon.

They were nervous about the news.

I sat at the head of the table in a black suit I hadn’t worn in months.

I kept my voice steady.

“The legal issues with my sister are being handled. They have nothing to do with Summit Capital or the acquisition. The deal remains on track. We close in forty-eight hours.”

One of the Langford executives leaned forward.

“Ms. Langford, we’ve seen the videos online. People are saying you’re unstable. How do we know this won’t affect the company?”

I looked at him directly.

“Because I built this company while raising my son alone. While grieving my parents. While my sister was slowly trying to erase me. I did it quietly. I did it completely. And I will continue to do it. The only instability here is coming from the people trying to take what isn’t theirs.”

The room was silent.

Then the lead negotiator nodded.

“Let’s close this deal.”

That night I picked Noah up from preschool.

He ran into my arms.

“Mommy, some kids said their moms saw Auntie Helen’s videos. They said you’re a bad mommy.”

I picked him up and held him tight.

“Those kids don’t know the truth. And neither do their moms. But we do. And that’s enough.”

He rested his head on my shoulder.

On the way home my phone rang.

It was Aunt Margaret.

“I saw the news,” she said. “The charges. Is it true? Did Diane really try to sell your company information?”

“Yes.”

Aunt Margaret was quiet for a long time.

“I’m sorry, Claire. I should have believed you sooner. Some of the family wants to talk. They’re starting to see what Helen is doing.”

I didn’t feel victory.

I only felt tired.

“I appreciate that,” I said. “But right now I need to focus on Noah and on keeping my company safe.”

“I understand. Just know we’re here if you need us.”

I hung up.

When we got home Noah went to play in his room.

I stood in the kitchen and looked at the drawing on the refrigerator.

MOMMY’S HOUSE.

In two days the Langford deal would close.

In two days my company would own one of the largest manufacturing groups in the region.

Diane and Helen would lose everything they had tried to steal.

And they would finally understand who they had been fighting this whole time.

I made dinner for Noah.

We ate together at the table.

He told me about a new friend at school who liked dinosaurs too.

I listened and smiled and asked questions.

After he went to bed I sat on the couch and opened my laptop one more time.

The final closing documents were ready.

I signed them.

Then I closed the laptop and turned off the lights.

Tomorrow would bring the end of one chapter.

And the beginning of something much bigger.

Something Diane and Helen could never touch.

May you like

Something I had built for my son.

And no one was going to take it from us.
