Chapter 10

Chapter 10

The sentencing hearing was quiet.

Diane stood in front of the judge in handcuffs.

Helen stood beside her.

The judge read the sentences without emotion.

“Diane Langford, for the charges of fraud, forgery, child endangerment, attempted theft of trade secrets, and conspiracy, I sentence you to eight years in state prison, followed by five years of probation. You will also pay full restitution for all stolen funds.”

Diane didn’t cry this time.

She just stared at the floor.

“Helen Morris, for the charges of conspiracy, perjury, and aiding and abetting fraud, I sentence you to three years in state prison, followed by three years of probation. You will also pay restitution and are barred from any contact with the victim or her child.”

Helen started crying.

The guards led them both away.

I sat in the back of the courtroom with Noah beside me.

He held my hand the whole time.

When it was over, we walked outside together.

The sun was bright.

Aunt Margaret and Uncle Robert were waiting on the steps.

Aunt Margaret hugged me first.

Then she hugged Noah.

“I’m so glad this is finally over,” she said. “The family wants to have a gathering next month. Only the people who supported you. We want to apologize properly.”

I looked at her.

“I’ll think about it. Right now I just want to focus on Noah.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

Uncle Robert shook my hand.

“You did the right thing, Claire. We should have seen it sooner.”

I didn’t say anything.

Some things didn’t need words anymore.

That afternoon Noah and I went home.

The house felt different now.

Lighter.

I made lunch while he played in the living room.

After we ate, he climbed into my lap on the couch.

“Mommy, are Auntie Diane and Auntie Helen ever coming back?”

I brushed his hair back.

“No, sweetheart. They’re not. And they can’t hurt us anymore.”

He was quiet for a minute.

“Good. I like it better when it’s just us.”

I held him tighter.

“Me too.”

That evening I got a call from my business partner.

“The next acquisition is ready for your review. Langford is running smoother than expected. The board is happy.”

I smiled.

“Send me the files. I’ll look at them tonight after Noah goes to bed.”

When I hung up, I walked to the refrigerator and looked at Noah’s old drawing.

MOMMY’S HOUSE.

I took it down carefully and put it in a frame.

Then I hung it in the living room where we could both see it every day.

That night after Noah was asleep, I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop.

The new acquisition files were waiting.

I opened them and started reading.

Halfway through, I stopped.

I closed the laptop and walked to Noah’s room again.

He was sleeping peacefully.

I stood there for a long time just watching him.

We had made it.

Through the drugs.

Through the lies.

Through the forged documents.

Through the public attacks.

Through the fear.

We had made it.

And now the future I had built in secret was ours.

No one could take it away.

I went back to the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea.

Then I sat at the table and opened the laptop again.

But before I started working, I picked up my phone and sent one message to Aunt Margaret.

“Thank you for being there today. Maybe we can have that family gathering after all. Just the people who chose us.”

She replied a minute later.

“We would love that. Whenever you’re ready.”

I set the phone down.

Then I opened the acquisition files and got back to work.

Because the fight was over.

But my life was just beginning.

And I was going to make sure it was everything Noah deserved.

Everything we both deserved.

Safe.

May you like

Secure.

And finally, finally ours.
