Chapter 10

The sun was setting over the Atlantic.

Pink and orange and purple streaked across the sky. The waves crashed soft and steady on the sand.

I sat on a blanket. Lily was in my lap. Warm. Soft. Her tiny hand curled around my finger. She was eating a strawberry. Juice running down her chin.

“Mama,” she said, pointing at a seagull. “Bird!”

“Yes, baby,” I said. Kissing the top of her head. “That’s a bird. Pretty, isn’t it?”

She nodded. Wiggled out of my lap. Ran toward the water. Her little legs pumping. Laughing so hard she could barely breathe.

Arthur sat next to me. Sipping lemonade. Watching her. Smiling.

“She’s perfect,” he said.

I nodded.

“She is.”

Mia ran past us. Chasing Lily. Holding a bucket and a spade.

“Wait for me, Lils!” she yelled.

Lily turned around. Laughed. Ran faster.

I looked at them.

At Mia. Who’d found the courage to stand up to her brother. Who’d become the sister I’d always wanted. Who loved Lily like she was her own.

At Arthur. Who’d found the courage to admit he’d been wrong. Who’d become the father I’d lost when my dad died. Who’d built a second family with us.

At Lily. Running free. Happy. Safe. No fear. No pain. Just love.

I thought about that night in the bathroom.

The cold tile. The blood. The pain. The fear that I would lose everything.

I thought about Daniel and Helen. Rotting in prison. Getting exactly what they deserved.

I thought about all the battles I’d fought. The lies. The betrayals. The court cases. The boardroom fights. The moments I’d wanted to give up.

But I never did.

Because of Lily.

She was my reason. My strength. My everything.

Mia caught Lily. Picked her up. Tossed her in the air. Lily screamed with joy. They ran back to the blanket. Lily holding a tiny seashell.

“For you, Mama,” she said. Handing it to me.

I took it. Held it to my ear. Heard the ocean roar.

“Thank you, baby,” I said. “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever owned.”

She smiled. Crawled into my lap. Ate another strawberry.

Arthur stood up. Brushed the sand off his pants.

“I’m going to get the hot dogs started,” he said. “Mia, you want to help?”

“Sure!” Mia said.

They walked to the picnic table a few feet away. Laughing. Talking. Leaving me and Lily alone for a minute.

I held Lily close.

Rocked her slow. The sun dipped lower. Painted the whole world gold.

“You know, Lily,” I whispered. “Once upon a time, I was very scared. I thought I was going to lose you. I thought the bad people were going to win. But then I remembered something my grandma used to tell me.”

Lily looked up at me. Big blue eyes. Curious.

“Love always wins,” I said. “No matter how hard the bad people try. No matter how many lies they tell. No matter how much they fight. Love is stronger. Always.”

I kissed her forehead.

“And I love you more than all the stars in the sky. More than all the sand on all the beaches in the whole world. More than anything. And I will spend every single day for the rest of my life making sure you know that. Making sure you feel safe. Making sure you know you can be anything you want to be. Do anything you want to do. Because I will always be here. To hold you. To protect you. To love you. Forever.”

Lily snuggled into my chest.

“Love you, Mama,” she mumbled. Half asleep.

My throat tightened. Tears ran down my face. Happy tears. The best kind.

“I love you too, baby,” I said. “More than anything.”

Arthur called us over for dinner.

I stood up. Lily in my arms. The seashell in my pocket.

Walked toward the table. Toward my family. Toward the life I’d fought so hard for.

The life we all deserved.

The sun set completely.

The first stars came out.

And for the first time in my life, I was completely, perfectly happy.

No fear.

No pain.

Just love.

May you like

Just us.

Forever.
