Chapter 4

Marcus had the SUV moving before I even closed the door.

He weaved through back streets. Took three different highways. Switched cars twice at pre-planned safe spots. By the time we got back to the gated house, I was shaking.

“Did they follow us?” I asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“No,” he said. “I checked. They were at the coffee shop for a domestic dispute call two doors down. They weren’t looking for you.”

I collapsed onto the couch. My heart was still pounding. Lily kicked hard, like she could feel my fear. I put my hand on my belly, breathed deep until I calmed down.

That close call was a wake-up call.

I couldn’t hide forever. Sooner or later, Daniel and Helen would find me. Or the police would. I had to move faster.

Two weeks later, I went into labor.

It was fast. Scary. Dr. Rao and two nurses were there. Marcus paced the hallway outside. I screamed. Pushed. Fought for every second.

And then I heard it.

Lily’s cry.

Loud. Strong. Perfect.

They put her on my chest. Warm. Soft. Her tiny hand curled around my finger. She had my eyes. My mother’s nose. Ten tiny fingers. Ten tiny toes.

I cried. Happy tears this time. The kind that hurt so good you can’t breathe.

“I love you,” I whispered to her. “I love you more than anything in the whole world. I will never let anyone hurt you. Ever.”

She snuggled closer to me. Fell asleep.

For the first time since that night in the bathroom, I felt peace.

But it didn’t last.

The next morning, Marcus knocked on my bedroom door. His face was grim.

“Daniel and Helen just filed a lawsuit,” he said.

I sat up, Lily still sleeping in my arms.

“What kind of lawsuit?”

“Custody,” he said. “They’re claiming you’re mentally unfit. They have three sworn statements from ‘witnesses’ saying you were violent, suicidal, addicted to painkillers. They’re asking the court for full custody of Lily the moment you’re found. And they’ve put out an AMBER Alert. Your name and face are on every news channel in the state.”

I looked down at Lily.

Her tiny chest rose and fell. Soft. Innocent.

They wanted to take her from me.

They’d never even held her. Never heard her cry. Never felt her tiny hand around their finger. But they wanted to steal her. Raise her as their own. Turn her against me.

Rage burned through me. Hot and white.

“Okay,” I said. My voice was steady. Cold. “No more waiting.”

I handed Lily to the nurse who’d stayed to help. Got out of bed. Walked to my office. Marcus followed.

“Call the board of Hale Holdings,” I said. “Tell them I’m activating my full authority. We’re making a move on Langford Group. Today.”

Marcus’s eyes widened.

“Now? You just gave birth yesterday.”

“Now,” I said. “We use the Blackwood blind trust. No one will know it’s Hale. We make a public bid for thirty percent of Langford’s outstanding stock. Ten percent over market value. The shareholders will jump at it. And when we have that thirty percent, we call an emergency board meeting. And we fire Daniel.”

Marcus nodded. Pulled out his phone.

I sat down at my desk. Stared at the photo of my father on the wall. He’d taught me everything I knew about business. About strategy. About winning without fighting dirty.

“Dad,” I whispered. “Watch this.”

By the end of the day, the business world was on fire.

Blackwood Capital’s hostile takeover bid for Langford Group was the top story on every financial news channel. No one knew who was behind Blackwood. Speculation ran wild. Rival CEOs. Foreign investors. Hedge funds.

Daniel panicked.

I listened to him scream at his lawyers over the bug in his office.

“Thirty percent?” he yelled. “Who the hell is Blackwood? Find them! Buy them off! Threaten them! I don’t care what it takes! I am not losing my company!”

Helen was right there with him. Calmer. Colder.

“Relax, baby,” she purred. “We have a better plan. The media loves us. We’re the grieving husband and the poor, supportive mistress who only wants to help. Let’s go on TV. Tell everyone this Blackwood group is working with Clara. That she’s behind the takeover to get revenge on you. That she’s using the baby as leverage. The public will hate her. The board will side with us. And when we get custody of that little brat, we’ll use her to make Clara give up the bid.”

I felt sick.

They were going to use my daughter as a pawn.

But I was ready.

That night, Helen went on national TV.

She sat in the studio. Wore a simple white dress. No makeup. Crying on cue. Daniel sat next to her, holding her hand.

“Clara is a very sick woman,” Helen said to the camera. Her voice cracked perfectly. “She’s been planning this takeover for months. She’s using our unborn daughter to hurt Daniel. To hurt all of us at Langford. We just want our baby back. We want Clara to get the help she needs. Please, if you know where she is… help us.”

The interview went viral.

Millions of views in an hour. Thousands of comments. Most of them on their side.

#FindClara #SaveTheBaby trended nationwide.

I watched it all. Lily curled up on my lap, sleeping.

I didn’t get mad.

I got to work.

Marcus called an hour later.

“We have the thirty percent,” he said. “Shareholders are selling faster than we can buy. We’re the largest single shareholder in Langford Group now. The emergency board meeting is scheduled for next week.”

“Good,” I said. “But we have a problem. Helen’s interview worked. The public is on their side. If we fire Daniel now, they’ll say we’re bullies. That we’re helping the crazy wife.”

I thought for a minute.

“Leak the first page of Mia’s folder to the press. Anonymous. Just the part about Helen stealing from the pension fund. No names. No proof yet. Just enough to make people ask questions.”

Marcus smiled.

“On it.”

The next morning, the headline hit every news site.

LANGFORD GROUP PENSION FUND MISSING MILLIONS: ANONYMOUS SOURCE POINTS TO FRAUD BY SENIOR EXECS.

The tide turned.

Fast.

People started questioning Helen. Questioning Daniel. If they’d stolen from their own employees, what else had they lied about?

I smiled.

Checkmate.

Or so I thought.

That afternoon, I got a hand-delivered envelope at the safe house.

No return address.

I opened it.

Inside was a court summons.

And a handwritten note from Helen.

You think a little leak will stop me? I have the best custody lawyer in the state. I have three more witnesses. I have a judge who owes me a favor. Next week, the court will declare you legally unfit. And I will walk into that safe house and take your daughter. And there’s nothing you can do about it.

See you in court, Clara.

My blood ran cold.

She knew where I was.
