Chapter 4

Chapter 3
Sarah stood in the doorway like an avenging angel.
Her eyes burned into mine.
"You called the police on Mom? While you're pregnant? How could you?"
I kept my hand on my belly.
My son shifted inside me, restless.
Daniel stepped between us.
"Sarah, not now. I saw the video."
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"Video? Mom said Lena doctored it. She's been acting strange for months. Fragile, remember?"
Marcus stayed quiet, but his eyes were sharp.
He slipped a document into my hand.
A restraining order draft.
I signed it without hesitation.
Sarah's mouth fell open.
"You're actually doing this? Daniel, stop her!"
Daniel rubbed his temples.
"I don't know what to do."
I spoke softly.
"You can start by believing the mother of your child."
Sarah crossed her arms.
"Fine. If you want war, we'll have war. The whole family is coming over tomorrow. We'll see who they believe."
She stormed out, slamming the door.
The sound rattled the windows.
Marcus turned to me.
"We need to get you to a safe location tonight."
Daniel looked at him like he was speaking another language.
"Safe location? This is our home."
Marcus didn't blink.
"Not anymore. Not until the judge rules."
I felt a sharp twinge in my side.
Not pain, just pressure.
My son reminding me time was short.
I breathed through it.
"Daniel, you can come with me or stay here. But I won't stay under the same roof as Helen's allies."
He stared at the floor.
"I need to talk to Mom first."
The words hit like a slap.
Marcus handed me a set of keys.
"A condo downtown. Fully secured. The team is already there."
I took the keys.
My fingers brushed Daniel's arm as I passed.
He didn't pull away.
But he didn't follow either.
In the car, Marcus drove.
I watched the house shrink in the mirror.
My phone buzzed again.
Another text.
This one from Daniel's brother, Mark.
"Mom says you stole company papers. Langford board is meeting tomorrow. Don't think we won't fight."
Langford.
The name again.
I closed my eyes.
They had no idea how deep my roots went into that company.
Years ago, before I met Daniel, I changed my name.
Rivera wasn't my birth name.
I was born into the Langford empire.
The one Helen married into and tried to rule after her husband died.
The one she thought she owned through Daniel.
But I had been buying shares quietly.
Under trusts.
Under shells.
Waiting for the moment she showed her true face.
Marcus glanced at me.
"The board meeting. We can accelerate the proxy votes."
I nodded.
"Do it. But quietly."
He smiled faintly.
"That's why you pay me the big bucks."
At the condo, security was already in place.
Two men nodded as we entered.
The place was sleek, modern, nothing like our cozy house.
I sank onto the couch.
My belly felt heavier tonight.
Marcus set up his laptop.
"First court date is in three days. Temporary custody order for the child."
I rubbed my belly.
My son kicked in response.
"Good," I whispered to him.
"Stay safe in there."
Daniel called at midnight.
His voice was hoarse.
"Mom is out on bail. She says she'll fight for grandparent rights."
I stayed calm.
"Let her try."
He hesitated.
"Lena... I love you. But this is tearing me apart."
I closed my eyes.
"Choose a side, Daniel. Before it's too late."
He hung up without answering.
The next morning Sarah posted on social media.
A long tearful story about a "devoted grandmother" being torn from her grandchild by a "hysterical pregnant wife."
Comments flooded in.
Family. Friends. Strangers calling me crazy.
Marcus showed me the post.
"Public image war. Classic Helen."
I sipped water.
My hands didn't shake.
"Release the redacted recording. Anonymously."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Smart."
By noon the comments flipped.
People asking questions about the first wife.
About the tea.
About the camera.
Helen called me directly.
I answered.
Her voice was sweet poison.
"You think you can win this with tricks? The family knows the truth. And Langford board will never let an outsider touch our legacy."
I smiled even though she couldn't see.
"Legacy? Helen, you have no idea whose legacy it really is."
She paused.
Then laughed.
"Delusional. Just like I told Daniel."
I ended the call.
Marcus looked up from his screen.
"Proxy votes are moving. We hit thirty percent this morning."
My son kicked hard.
Like he was cheering.
I placed both hands over him.
"We're taking it back, baby. All of it."
The court date loomed.
Daniel texted he would meet me there.
Sarah texted threats.
Mark texted offers to mediate if I dropped the charges.
I ignored them all.
That night the twinge came back stronger.
I called the doctor.
Marcus drove me to the private clinic he had arranged.
The one not tied to Helen's network.
The ultrasound showed my son was fine.
Strong heartbeat.
But the doctor frowned at my blood pressure.
"Stress is the enemy right now."
I nodded.
Stress.
I knew exactly where it was coming from.
Back at the condo, Daniel was waiting outside.
He looked exhausted.
"I talked to Mom. She swears she was joking on the tape."
I walked past him into the building.
He followed.
"Lena, please."
Inside, I turned to him.
"Joking about accidents? About taking our son?"
He reached for me.
I stepped back.
"Daniel, I have evidence going back years. Helen isn't joking. She's planning."
He sank into a chair.
His head in his hands.
"I don't know who to believe anymore."
I sat across from him.
My belly between us like a shield.
"Believe the woman carrying your child."
He looked up, eyes wet.
"I want to. God, I want to."
My phone buzzed.
Marcus sent a message.
"Board meeting tomorrow. Helen will be there via video from the station."
I showed Daniel the text.
His eyes widened.
"How do you have access to the board schedule?"
I didn't answer.
Not fully.
But the pieces were shifting.
My hidden life was brushing against our real one.
And soon they would collide.
Daniel stood.
"I need to go see Mom before the meeting."
I let him leave.
But inside, I knew.
If he chose her again, I would choose our son.
And the empire waiting for me.
The next morning the court hearing began.
Helen appeared via video link, smiling that perfect smile.
Sarah sat in the gallery, glaring.
Daniel sat beside me, tense.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
My lawyer spoke calmly.
Then Helen's lawyer spun the story.
Hormones.
Paranoia.
False accusations.
I stayed silent.
Calm.
My hand on my belly the whole time.
My son was quiet now, like he was listening too.
The judge granted the temporary order.
Helen could not come near me or the house.
Daniel exhaled beside me.
But Helen's smile never wavered on the screen.
She looked straight into the camera.
"This is temporary, Your Honor. Families heal. And I will be there when my grandson is born."
The screen went black.
Daniel turned to me.
"Lena... I'm sorry."
I wanted to believe him.
But Sarah was already on her phone, texting the family.
The war wasn't over.
May you like
It had only just entered the courtroom.
And I still had an empire to claim.
