Chapter 23

Lily came home from college for Christmas with Liam.
And a ring on her finger.
They’d gotten engaged on the beach at sunset. Classic Lily.
We were thrilled.
Liam was perfect. Kind. Smart. Passionate. He loved the ocean almost as much as she did. And the way he looked at her… like she was the only woman in the world.
The wedding was the following summer.
In California. Right on the beach. At sunset.
Lily was the most beautiful bride anyone had ever seen. Her dress was simple and elegant, her hair loose and flowing with flowers.
I walked her down the aisle.
She squeezed my arm tight.
“Thank you, Mom,” she whispered. “For everything.”
“I love you, baby.”
“Love you too.”
I gave her away to Liam.
And as I sat down beside Daniel, watching them exchange vows, I thought about the little girl I’d carried out of that ballroom all those years ago.
Scared. Hurt. Broken.
And now this.
Strong. Happy. Loved.
Marrying the man of her dreams.
Ready to take on the world.
The cycle was truly, completely broken.
At the reception, Lily danced with me for the mother-daughter dance.
We held each other tight.
“I love you, Mom,” she said. “More than anything.”
“I love you too, Lily. Always and forever.”
When the song ended, she didn’t let go. She held on a little longer.
“Mom?”
“Hmm?”
“When I have kids… I’m gonna be just like you.”
I pulled back to look at her. Tears were streaming down both our faces.
“No, baby,” I said. “You’re gonna be better. Because you had me to show you the way. You don’t have to learn the hard way like I did. You already know what matters. Love. Family. Kindness. Forgiveness. You’re gonna be the best mom in the world. I just know it.”
May you like
She hugged me again.
“Only because I had the best teacher.”
