Chapter 2: The Moment the Wedding Stopped

The backyard didn’t understand what was happening.
The music was still playing.
The guests were still smiling.
But Daniel Callahan was no longer walking toward his bride.
He was walking away.
Ellie clung to his shoulder, her small fingers buried in his suit like she was afraid the world might take her again.
Behind him, Ryan froze.
“Daniel!” he called quietly. “You’re not serious—this is the ceremony.”
Daniel didn’t stop.
His voice was calm, but something inside it had already broken.
“I found my daughter locked in a bathroom.”
That sentence didn’t land immediately.
It took a second.
Then another.
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Locked?”
Daniel nodded once.
“I’m done pretending this is normal.”
At the altar, Vanessa stood perfectly still.
Her smile didn’t fall.
Not yet.
But her eyes shifted.
May you like
Just slightly.
Like she was recalculating a future that had just collapsed mid-sentence.
