Chapter 3

The next morning Max woke up early.

He climbed into my lap on the couch without saying anything.

His nose was still a little swollen.

I made him breakfast and let him eat it in front of the cartoons.

He kept glancing at the front door like he expected Grace to walk back in.

I changed the locks that same morning.

The locksmith finished just before lunch.

Max watched from the window the whole time.

When the man left, I sat Max down at the kitchen table.

“Baby, I need you to tell me everything that happened while I was gone,” I said gently. “Even the parts that are scary.”

He looked down at his hands.

“She got mad a lot,” he whispered. “When I spilled things. When I cried about Daddy. She said I was being a baby and that real boys don’t cry.”

My chest tightened, but I kept my face calm.

“Did she hit you more than once?”

He nodded slowly.

“Sometimes with her hand. Sometimes with the wooden spoon. She said it was to teach me.”

I took a deep breath.

“Did she lock you in the closet other times?”

“Three times,” he said in a tiny voice. “The last time was the longest. She said if I told you, you would send me away to live with strangers.”

I pulled him onto my lap and held him.

“You are never going anywhere. You’re staying with me. Forever. I promise.”

He buried his face in my shoulder.

That afternoon the police came to take a statement.

Max sat on my lap while he told the officer what happened.

He was brave.

He didn’t cry until the end.

The officer was kind.

She took photos of his face and the bruises on his arm.

Then she told me they would arrest Grace for child abuse.

After they left, my phone started ringing.

It was my mother.

I let it go to voicemail.

Then my aunt called.

Then my cousin.

I ignored all of them.

Helen posted the first video that evening.

She stood in her kitchen looking upset.

“Grace is being attacked by her own sister,” Helen said to the camera. “Rachel came home and kicked her out without even listening. Grace has been the one raising Max while Rachel travels for work. This is so unfair.”

The comments started pouring in.

Some people said Grace was probably innocent.

Some said I was overreacting.

A few asked why Max had a bloody nose in the first place.

I turned my phone off.

Max was drawing at the table.

He drew a picture of our house with a big lock on the door.

Then he drew me standing in front of him like a shield.

I taped it to the refrigerator.

That night after Max fell asleep, I opened my work laptop.

There was another email about the Langford Group deal.

My company was close to finalizing the acquisition.

If everything went through, it would secure Max’s future for life.

Grace had been using the joint accounts I set up for household expenses.

She didn’t know those accounts were only a small part of what I controlled.

She also didn’t know I had already started moving assets into trusts for Max months ago.

I had been planning for a long time.

Even before my husband died, I suspected Grace wasn’t as helpful as she seemed.

I just never thought she would hurt Max.

Now she had.

And she was dragging Helen into it.

I sent a message to my lawyer.

“File for full custody tomorrow. Include the police report and Max’s statement. Also start looking into Helen’s involvement. She’s posting videos and probably helping Grace talk to the family.”

He replied quickly.

“Already on it. The restraining order is being processed. Grace will be arrested in the morning.”

I closed the laptop and went to check on Max.

He was sleeping with the light on, just like he had started doing weeks ago.

I sat on the edge of the bed and watched him.

My sweet boy.

The one person I had left in this world.

Grace thought she could break him while I was away.

She was wrong.

I was done being the quiet widow who traveled for work and trusted her sister.

From now on, I was going to fight with everything I had.

For Max.

And for the future I had been quietly building.

Grace and Helen had no idea what was coming.

But they were about to find out.
