Chapter 9

The final custody hearing was set for the following week.
Grace’s lawyer tried one last time to negotiate.
They offered more information about Helen.
They claimed Helen had been the one pushing Grace to be stricter with Max.
They said Helen had helped come up with the idea to use the closet as punishment.
I didn’t care about their excuses anymore.
I just wanted it over.
On the morning of the hearing, I dressed Max in his favorite dinosaur shirt.
He looked nervous but not scared.
We walked into the courtroom together.
Grace was already there in her jumpsuit.
Helen was brought in separately in handcuffs.
Both of them looked defeated.
My lawyer presented the full case one last time.
The police reports.
The photos.
Max’s statements.
The therapist’s evaluation.
The evidence of Helen’s involvement.
Grace’s lawyer tried to argue one more time that Max’s injuries were minor and that Grace had been under stress.
The judge didn’t even let him finish.
“I have heard enough,” he said. “The evidence of repeated physical and emotional abuse is overwhelming. Grace Langford, you are hereby stripped of all parental rights and guardianship. You will serve the remainder of your sentence and face additional charges for your actions. Helen Morris, you are found guilty of conspiracy and aiding in the abuse of a child. You will serve your sentence and are permanently barred from any contact with Max or Rachel.”
He banged the gavel.
It was over.
Grace started crying.
Helen just stared at the table.
I took Max’s hand and walked out of the courtroom.
Outside, my mother and uncle were waiting.
Mom hugged Max first.
Then she hugged me.
“I’m proud of you,” she whispered. “You did what was right.”
Uncle Robert shook my hand.
“The rest of the family is starting to see the truth,” he said. “Helen’s videos didn’t help her in the end. A lot of us are sorry we didn’t support you sooner.”
I nodded.
It was enough.
That afternoon we went home.
Max ran straight to his room and started playing.
I sat in the kitchen and opened my laptop one last time before the Langford closing.
Everything was ready.
The deal would close on Monday.
My company would officially own Langford Group.
Max’s future would be completely secure.
I closed the laptop and went to play with him.
We built another fort.
This time he laughed when it fell over.
He didn’t flinch.
He just started building it again.
That night after he fell asleep, I sat on the edge of his bed for a long time.
My son.
My whole world.
Grace and Helen had tried to break him.
They had tried to break me.
They failed.
I had protected him.
I had built something bigger than they ever imagined.
And now it was all ours.
I kissed his forehead and whispered, “I love you, Max. Mommy’s got you. Always.”
Then I went to bed.
For the first time in months, I slept deeply.
No nightmares.
No checking the locks every hour.
Just peace.
May you like
Because the fight was finally over.
And we had won.
