Chapter 5

Helen didn’t stop.
The next day she posted three more videos.
In one she showed text messages she claimed were from Grace in jail.
Grace was saying she missed Max and was worried about him.
Helen added her own words at the end.
“Rachel won’t even let Grace’s own family check on Max. This is starting to look like parental alienation.”
The comments got worse.
Some family members started tagging me.
Others sent private messages asking why I was keeping Max away from everyone.
I didn’t reply to any of them.
Instead I took Max to a child therapist my lawyer recommended.
The therapist was gentle.
She let Max draw and play while we talked.
After the session she pulled me aside.
“He’s been through a lot,” she said quietly. “The physical abuse is clear, but there’s emotional damage too. He’s scared of being left alone. He thinks if he does anything wrong, someone will hurt him or send him away. We need to work on rebuilding his sense of safety.”
I nodded.
“Whatever he needs. I’ll do it.”
That afternoon my mother called again.
This time she sounded different.
“Rachel, I went to see Grace,” she said. “She’s still saying Max was difficult and that you’re exaggerating. But… she also admitted she locked him in the closet. She said it was only once.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“It was more than once. Max told me.”
Mom was quiet.
“I believe you,” she finally said. “I saw his face. I saw how he hides behind you now. I’m sorry I didn’t see it before.”
Some of the tightness in my chest eased.
“Thank you.”
“Some of the family still believes Helen,” Mom continued. “But not all of us. Your uncle and I are on your side. We want to help however we can.”
I looked at Max playing quietly in the living room.
“Max needs to feel safe,” I said. “No more surprise visits. No one showing up without calling first. And no talking to Grace or Helen about him.”
“I understand,” Mom said. “Just… don’t shut us all out, okay? We want to be there for both of you.”
After the call I sat with Max and helped him build a Lego tower.
He smiled when it got tall.
Then it fell over and he flinched like he expected someone to yell.
I didn’t yell.
I just started building it again with him.
“Accidents happen,” I said softly. “It’s okay.”
He watched me for a second, then started helping again.
That night I got another email about the Langford deal.
This time it was worse.
Someone had sent an anonymous tip to the Langford board claiming my company was unstable because of “family legal issues.”
They mentioned my name and Grace’s arrest.
My business partner called me right after.
“Rachel, the board is getting nervous,” he said. “They want to know if this custody situation is going to affect the deal.”
I kept my voice steady.
“It won’t. Grace has no legal power over me or my company. The guardianship was temporary and is already being terminated. I’ve had full control of my assets this entire time.”
“Are you sure?” he asked. “Because if this leaks more, it could delay closing.”
“I’m sure,” I said. “Tell the board I’ll address any concerns directly if they want. But the deal stays on track.”
After the call I sat in the kitchen for a long time.
Grace was in jail.
Helen was still free and causing damage.
And now they were trying to touch the one thing I had built in secret.
The company.
The future I had planned for Max while Grace was busy smiling and posting pictures.
She had no idea how much I actually controlled.
She thought the joint accounts were everything.
She was wrong.
I had been moving money and assets into protected trusts for over a year.
Even before my husband died, I had started building quietly.
Because deep down, I never fully trusted Grace.
Now I had proof I was right.
I picked up my phone and texted my lawyer.
“Grace and Helen are trying to interfere with my business. I want to add that to the charges if possible. Also, start preparing a statement for the board if they ask.”
He replied quickly.
“Already looking into it. We’ll protect the company.”
I put the phone down and went to check on Max.
He was asleep with the light on again.
I turned it off and sat beside him until he settled.
Then I went back to the kitchen and opened my laptop one more time.
The Langford files were waiting.
I started reviewing the final documents.
Grace and Helen thought they were fighting me for Max and some money.
They had no idea they were fighting against something much bigger.
Something I had built while they underestimated me.
And I wasn’t going to let them destroy it.

Not now.
Not ever.
