Chapter 5

That night, I made my decision.
I was done pretending.
I called Marcus, my head of security, and told him to prepare everything. Tomorrow, I would reveal the truth to everyone who mattered.
But before that, there was one person I wanted to speak with privately.
Clara.
I found her in the kitchen late at night, finishing up the last of the dishes. She looked surprised when she saw me standing in the doorway — not in the wheelchair.
Her eyes widened.
“Sir… you’re walking?”
I nodded.
“I’ve been able to walk for weeks. The paralysis was never real.”
Clara stared at me, processing what I had just said.
“You… you were testing them?”
“Yes.”
She lowered her gaze.
“And I failed the test too, I suppose.”
“No,” I said gently. “You were the only one who passed.”
She looked up, confused.
I walked closer and stopped in front of her.
“Everyone else saw a broken man and treated me like I was already worthless. You saw someone hurting and chose to be kind. That’s not failure, Clara. That’s the only thing that mattered to me.”
She was quiet for a long moment.
Then she said, “I didn’t do it because I thought you were testing me. I did it because… it was the right thing to do.”
I smiled.
“I know. That’s exactly why I trust you.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the engagement ring I had taken off earlier.
“Vanessa and I are finished. I should have ended it the moment I realized she only cared about what I could give her.”
Clara’s eyes widened slightly, but she didn’t speak.
I continued.
“I don’t know what the future looks like yet. But I know I don’t want to build it with people who only stay when things are easy. I want people who stay even when everything falls apart.”
I looked at her directly.
“And right now, you’re the only person I can think of who fits that description.”
Clara’s cheeks flushed.
“Sir, I’m just a maid…”
“You’re not ‘just’ anything,” I said firmly. “Not to me.”
She looked down at her hands, then back up at me.
“What are you saying?”
I took a small step closer.
“I’m saying that when this is all over, I’d like to get to know you. Not as my maid. Not as someone who works for me. But as someone I want in my life.”
Clara was quiet for a long time.
Then, very softly, she said, “I’d like that too.”
For the first time since the accident, I felt something real and warm settle in my chest.
Tomorrow, I would reveal the truth to everyone.
But tonight, I had already found the only thing that truly mattered.
May you like
Someone who saw me when I had nothing to offer.
And chose to stay anyway.
