Chapter 7

After the revelation, the house became very quiet.
Many of the people who had been living in or frequently visiting the estate suddenly found reasons to leave. My uncle Martin packed his things and moved out within two days. My cousins stopped calling. Even some of the staff who had been gossiping about me quietly resigned.
Only a few people remained.
Clara stayed.
She continued doing her work quietly, but something had changed between us. She no longer treated me like her employer. There was a new softness in the way she spoke to me, and a new warmth in the way I looked at her.
One evening, I found her in the garden, watering the roses. She looked up when she heard my footsteps.
“You’re walking,” she said with a small smile. “It still feels strange to see.”
I walked over and stood beside her.
“It feels strange to me too sometimes,” I admitted. “I got used to pretending.”
Clara was quiet for a moment.
“Why did you do it?” she asked. “Why pretend to be paralyzed for so long?”
I looked at the roses.
“Because I wanted to know who truly cared about me,” I said. “Not my money. Not my status. Not what I could give them. Just… me.”
She nodded slowly.
“And now you know.”
“Yes,” I said. “Now I know.”
We stood in comfortable silence for a while.
Then Clara spoke again, her voice soft.
“I was scared when you revealed the truth. I thought you might be angry at me too.”
I turned to her, surprised.
“Why would I be angry at you?”
She looked down at the watering can in her hands.
“Because I’m just the maid. I thought maybe you would see me as part of everything you wanted to leave behind.”
I gently took the watering can from her hands and set it down.
“Clara,” I said, “you were the only person in that entire ballroom who treated me with kindness when you thought I had nothing. That means more to me than anything else.”
She looked up at me, her eyes searching mine.
“What happens now?” she asked quietly.
I took a small step closer.
“Now,” I said, “I want to get to know you. Not as my employee. Not as someone who works in my house. But as the woman who saw me when everyone else looked away.”
Clara’s cheeks turned pink, but she didn’t look away.
“I’d like that too,” she whispered.
For the first time in a very long time, I felt something real growing between us.
Not built on money.
Not built on status.
May you like
But built on something much rarer.
Genuine care.
