Chapter 6

The next morning, I called everyone into the grand ballroom.

No one knew why. I had simply sent a message through the household staff that I wanted to address the entire family and close circle. Vanessa arrived looking irritated, wearing another expensive dress as if she were attending a party. My uncle Martin came with a smug expression, probably expecting to hear that I was stepping down from the company. My cousins and so-called friends gathered with barely hidden curiosity.

Clara stood quietly at the back of the room, near the wall. She was the only one who looked genuinely concerned.

I entered the room in my wheelchair, playing the part one last time.

Vanessa was the first to speak.

“Darling, what is this about? You shouldn’t be stressing yourself like this.”

I ignored her and looked around the room.

“Thank you all for coming,” I said calmly. “I know many of you have been worried about my condition since the accident. Some of you have even been very… vocal about how my situation affects you.”

A few people shifted uncomfortably.

I continued.

“Over the past few weeks, I’ve learned a lot about the people around me. I’ve seen who stays when they think you have nothing left to offer. And I’ve seen who disappears the moment they believe you’ve become a burden.”

Vanessa’s smile faltered slightly.

I looked directly at her.

“Vanessa, you once told me that you were supposed to marry a powerful man, not a burden. You said my board would soon realize I couldn’t lead anymore. You’ve been waiting for me to become useless so you could walk away without losing too much.”

She opened her mouth to speak, but I raised my hand.

“I’m not finished.”

I turned to my uncle.

“Uncle Martin, you’ve been speaking to lawyers about contesting my position as CEO. You’ve been telling people I’m no longer fit to run the company. You even started reaching out to some of our major investors behind my back.”

Martin’s face turned red, but he said nothing.

I looked at my cousins and a few of my so-called friends.

“Most of you have been waiting. Waiting to see what you could take from me once I was no longer in control. Some of you even smiled when Vanessa insulted me in front of everyone.”

The room was completely silent now.

I placed both hands on the wheels of the chair and slowly pushed myself up.

Gasps filled the ballroom.

I stood tall, my legs steady beneath me. The blanket slipped from my lap and fell to the floor.

“I was never paralyzed,” I said clearly. “The accident was real, but my injury was not. I wanted to see who would stand by me when they thought I had nothing left. And now I know.”

Vanessa took a step back, her face pale.

“You… you lied to us?”

I looked at her coldly.

“No, Vanessa. I tested you. And you failed.”

She tried to recover, forcing a smile.

“Alexander, darling, this is all just a misunderstanding. I was only saying those things because I was scared for you—”

“Stop,” I said. “You’ve said enough.”

I turned to the rest of the room.

“From this moment forward, anyone who laughed at me, insulted me, or tried to take advantage of my supposed condition is no longer welcome in my life or my company. You will be removed from all positions, and legal action will be taken where necessary.”

My uncle Martin exploded.

“You can’t do that! This is our family’s company!”

I looked at him.

“No, Uncle. It’s my company. And I’ve already spoken with the board. They know the truth now.”

I looked around one last time.

“Some of you showed me who you really are when you thought I was broken. I won’t forget it.”

Then my eyes found Clara at the back of the room. She was the only one not looking shocked or angry. She simply looked relieved.

I smiled at her.

“And some of you,” I said, “showed me what real kindness looks like. I won’t forget that either.”

The room was silent.

I turned and walked out of the ballroom on my own two feet.

Behind me, chaos erupted.

But I didn’t look back.
