Chapter 6

The threat about my daughter changed everything.

Up until now, the fight had been about money, reputation, and control.

But now, it was personal — in the most dangerous way possible.

Father increased security around the house and my doctor’s office.

Two armed guards followed me everywhere I went.

All visitors were screened before entering.

“We are not taking any chances,” he said firmly. “They will try to exploit your greatest weakness, and that weakness is your love for your child.”

I agreed, but fear still lingered in my chest.

Every time a car drove too close, every time a stranger looked at me too long, I felt my heart race.

Two days later, a stranger approached me outside the clinic.

He was dressed in a suit, polite and smiling.

“Mrs. Elena,” he said. “I have a message from Helen Langford. She says if you drop all legal claims and sell your shares back to her for half price, she will call off all threats. She says she can protect you from anything bad happening.”

I stared at him.

“Protect me? She is the one making the threats.”

He kept smiling.

“Think about it. A quiet life is better than a war you might not win.”

“I will not negotiate with someone who uses my child as a weapon,” I replied. “Tell her that if anything happens to me or my baby, every single document we have will be released to every news outlet in the country. She will spend the rest of her life in prison.”

His smile faltered.

He nodded and walked away quickly.

That evening, Marcus came to the house unannounced.

He looked stressed and conflicted.

“I spoke to Helen again,” he said. “She told me if you don’t back off, she will reveal information about a transaction Father made ten years ago. She says it could land him in legal trouble.”

I felt my blood run cold.

“Is that true?”

Father, who had been listening from the doorway, stepped in.

“It is true that the transaction happened,” he said. “But it was legal, fully disclosed, and approved by regulators. However, it is complex enough that she could twist it into something it’s not, causing months of investigations and bad press.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Elena, please. Can’t we just walk away? We still have plenty of money. Why risk everything?”

“Because walking away means letting them win,” I said. “It means teaching my daughter that when people hurt you, you just run. I want her to grow up knowing that justice is worth fighting for.”

Marcus shook his head and left.

The divide in our family was growing wider.

But Clara stayed by my side.

She helped me organize files, kept track of dates, and even spoke to some of our distant relatives to explain the truth.

Slowly, the tide began to shift.

A few relatives started calling me again, saying they were sorry they had listened to rumors.

Some even offered support.

In the business world, our shareholding grew to 35%.

We were now the second-largest shareholders in Langford Group.

And then, we got a break.

One of Helen’s closest advisors, a man named Carter, approached us privately.

He was tired of her reckless decisions and worried the company would collapse completely.

“I have information,” he told us. “Full records of how she has been siphoning funds, falsifying reports, and bribing officials. If you protect me and my family, I will testify in court.”

Father looked him in the eye.

“Give us the proof, and we will make sure you are safe. But if you lie, you will regret it.”

Carter handed over a thick envelope.

Inside were records that went back five years.

As I read through them, I realized just how deep the corruption ran.

Helen hadn’t just been trying to take my money — she had been destroying the company from within to feed her own greed.

And now, we had the ammunition to bring her down.

But as I closed the envelope, I felt a sharp, sudden pain in my lower abdomen.

My water broke.

My daughter was coming earlier than expected.
