Chapter 9

The next few days were a whirlwind of activity.
Father and I took over the board of Langford Group.
We suspended Helen and Daniel from all positions.
We launched an internal audit to clean up the mess they had left behind.
But Helen’s words kept echoing in my mind.
*Dig too deep, and you might find something you never wanted to see.*
I asked our chief auditor to look for anything unusual — anything that didn’t fit the pattern of simple embezzlement.
Three days later, he came to me with a file.
His face was serious.
“Elena,” he said. “We found a series of transactions that go back twelve years. They are hidden in offshore accounts, under different names, but traced back to Helen.”
I leaned forward.
“What are they for?”
“Large sums were paid to a private investigation firm,” he said. “And one of the notes mentions your father’s name. It says — monitor his family, find weaknesses, plan future access.”
My breath caught.
“You mean… she targeted me long before I met Daniel?”
“It looks that way,” he said. “She didn’t just marry Daniel off to you for money. She chose you specifically because of your family. This was a plan years in the making.”
I felt sick.
All those months of thinking it was just a bad marriage — it was actually a trap, carefully set for over a decade.
I showed Father the file.
He read it slowly, his expression hardening.
“She knew exactly who we were,” he said. “She studied our every move. She wanted not just money, but control over our entire legacy.”
That same afternoon, Marcus called me, his voice shaking.
“Elena,” he said. “I just got a call from an old family friend. He told me something that has been kept secret for years. Before you were born, there was a business partnership between Father and Helen’s late husband. It fell apart badly. Some people say Helen blamed Father for her husband’s death.”
I froze.
“Her husband died in a car accident, didn’t he?”
“Yes,” Marcus said. “But she always believed Father had something to do with it. She swore revenge. She didn’t just want money — she wanted to destroy everything our family had built.”
Everything made sense now.
The cruelty, the manipulation, the obsession — it wasn’t just greed.
It was revenge.
I went to see Helen one last time.
She was in her private residence, no longer surrounded by staff or supporters.
She looked older, tired, but still defiant.
“You knew,” I said. “You planned this for years. You used me, hurt me, tried to take everything, all because of a grudge.”
She looked at me, and for the first time, there was no mask.
Only bitterness.
“He took everything from me,” she said. “My husband, my fortune, my status. I vowed I would take it all back, through his own bloodline. You were the perfect way in — young, trusting, easy to control.”
“You hurt an innocent child,” I said. “You hurt me, and you hurt my daughter, just to settle a score.”
“Revenge is never pretty,” she replied. “And you will find that even when you win, you still lose something. You have the company, but now you know how deep the hatred runs. You will never feel safe again.”
I stood up.
“I do feel safe,” I said. “Because I know who I am. And I know who you are. You are a woman who wasted her whole life chasing pain instead of building something good. That is your real loss.”
I turned to leave.
But as I reached the door, she spoke again, quieter this time.
“There is one more thing you should know,” she said. “When Daniel signed those papers asking you to transfer your assets, he wasn’t just following my orders. He had debts of his own — debts to dangerous people. If you think you’ve won, wait until those people come looking for their money.”

My blood ran cold.
Another layer of the story had just been revealed.
