Chapter 1

Eight months pregnant, I was curled in the pitch-black trunk of Daniel’s car.

The metal pressed cold and hard against my back and sides.

The air was stale, thick, and growing harder to breathe with every passing minute.

My waters had broken an hour earlier.

A slow, spreading wetness soaked through my clothes.

Pain was starting to grip my lower abdomen in sharp, tightening waves.

I had no idea where we were.

Just a quiet, empty stretch of road far from any lights or houses.

Daniel and his mistress, Liana, had thrown me in here after I’d caught them together in our home.

They’d tied my hands and feet with rough cord, gagged me, and driven for what felt like forever.

I thought this was the end.

I thought I would die here, alone, while my baby fought to be born in the dark.

Then I heard it.

A car pulling up.

Voices.

Footsteps crunching on gravel.

A loud click.

The trunk lock snapped open.

Blinding white light flooded in.

I gasped, my chest heaving, ready to cry out for help even if my voice broke.

My eyes adjusted.

And there he was.

My father.

His face was ashen, but his eyes burned with a rage so intense it felt like heat radiating off him.

Behind him stood two tall men in dark suits, still holding their car doors open.

A few feet away, Daniel and Liana stood frozen.

Their mouths hung open.

Their faces drained of all color.

They had not expected anyone to follow them.

They certainly had not expected him.

Father didn’t speak at first.

He leaned in quickly, his hands moving with practiced speed.

He pulled a sharp knife from his belt and sliced through the ropes binding my wrists and ankles.

“Easy, Elena,” he whispered, his voice shaking just a little. “I’ve got you. You’re safe now.”

He lifted me out as gently as if I were made of the finest porcelain.

One arm supported my back, the other went carefully beneath my knees.

I clung to his neck, sobbing, as another contraction tore through me.

Only then did he turn toward Daniel and Liana.

They stumbled backward, raising their hands as if to shield themselves from something invisible.

“Mr. Ward—please—we can explain,” Daniel stammered. “It was a mistake—we didn’t mean—”

Father’s voice dropped.

It was low, steady, and colder than the midnight air.

It cut through every excuse before it could even form.

“You locked my pregnant daughter in the trunk of a car and left her to die on the side of the road.”

He took one slow, heavy step forward.

The two men in suits moved instantly.

They grabbed Daniel and Liana by the arms, slamming them hard against the side of the vehicle.

Neither of them dared to struggle.

I leaned my weight against Father’s chest, my hand pressed firmly over my belly, feeling the baby shift and move inside me.

I looked up at the two people who had spent months treating me like nothing more than a burden or a tool.

In that moment, the arrogance vanished from their eyes.

The lies died on their tongues.

They finally understood.

May you like

The quiet, obedient wife they thought had no family, no power, and no protection—was his daughter.

And they had just crossed the only man who would burn the entire world down to keep me and my child alive.
