Chapter 9

The next few days were the hardest of all.

Social media exploded with rumors and speculation.

Some believed the leaked documents.

Others defended us.

But the confusion made everything slower and more difficult.

Father remained calm, but I could see the strain in his eyes.

“This is her final weapon,” he said. “She doesn’t care if the stories are true or not. She only cares about causing enough chaos to distract from her own crimes.”

We immediately launched a full investigation into the leak.

Our digital team traced the source to a server registered under a false name—but linked to a company that had done business with Helen in the past.

We also found something else.

Hidden among the leaked files were fragments of Helen’s own financial records.

She had tried to bury them, but they had been copied accidentally.

They showed that she had spent nearly five million dollars in the last year on lawyers, private investigators, and public relations firms.

Money that could only have come from the funds she had stolen from Langford Group.

While she was accusing us of corruption, she was using stolen money to fund her attacks.

We gathered all the proof we had—her payments, the doctor’s testimony, the attempted abduction, the lies to the press, and now the trail of stolen funds.

The final court hearing arrived.

The room was packed tighter than ever before.

The media was ready to broadcast every word.

Helen sat with her head held high, but her hands were clasped tightly in her lap.

Her lawyer presented the leaked documents, claiming they proved our takeover was illegal.

For a moment, it looked like the judge might agree.

Then it was our turn.

We presented the evidence step by step.

We showed how Helen had manipulated public opinion, paid witnesses, threatened my child, and stolen from the company.

We showed the truth about her husband’s death, proving Father had no involvement.

And finally, we showed the trail of money—every dollar she spent to attack us came from the company she claimed to protect.

As the evidence mounted, Helen’s composure crumbled.

Her face turned pale.

Her hands shook.

In a moment of total breakdown, she stood up and shouted across the room.

“You took everything from me! My husband, my fortune, my pride! I had to get it back any way I could!”

The whole room fell silent.

She had just confessed her motive, her anger, and her plan.

The judge stared at her, then spoke slowly and firmly.

“This court has heard enough. The evidence is overwhelming. Helen Langford, you have been found guilty of fraud, conspiracy, and endangering the life of a child. Daniel Langford and Liana Reed are also found guilty of attempted murder and conspiracy. The court will pass sentence in one week.”

As we left the courtroom, reporters surrounded us.

But this time, the questions were different.

People wanted to know the real story.

I held Lila in my arms, feeling the weight of the last few months lift from my shoulders.

But as we walked to the car, I noticed Helen standing alone by the entrance.

She looked old, defeated, and empty.

She looked at me, and for the first time, there was no anger in her eyes.

Only exhaustion.

“You won,” she whispered. “But tell me—did it feel worth it?”

I paused.

“It wasn’t about winning,” I said. “It was about protecting what is mine. You spent your life destroying others because you were hurt. I spent mine fighting to build something safe and good. That is the difference between us.”

She said nothing more.

She turned and walked away, knowing her life as she knew it was over.

But as we drove back home, Father received a call from the police.

“Sir,” the officer said. “We have just received information that the men Helen was working with—those who helped her move money and plan the threats—are now demanding payment from her. And they are angry that she has been caught.”

My heart dropped.

Even with the court case over, the danger was not gone.
