Chapter 2

We reached the private hospital just as the contractions became stronger and closer together.
Father never let go of my hand.
He gave orders to the staff in calm, clear tones, and every person moved as if they knew exactly who he was.
Only later, as I rested in a quiet, secure suite, did the questions start to rise in my mind.
“Father,” I whispered. “How did you find me? How did you know where they were taking me?”
He pulled a chair close to the bed and sat down, his expression softening but still carrying that sharp, watchful edge.
“I never stopped watching you, Elena,” he said quietly. “After you married Daniel Langford, I knew his family’s reputation. The Langfords have always been greedy, reckless, and hungry for more than they could earn honestly.”
I stared at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew,” he admitted. “But I wanted you to see the truth for yourself, not just hear it from me. I placed security measures in your home, quiet ones, so if you ever needed help, I would know immediately.”
My breath caught.
“So you were waiting for them to show their true colors.”
“I was waiting to make sure you were safe,” he corrected. “And tonight, they didn’t just show their true colors. They committed a crime that changes everything.”
A knock came at the door.
One of the men from earlier stepped inside.
“Sir,” he said. “Daniel and Liana are in custody. The police are already on-site, but we have secured the area. And Mrs. Helen Langford is already calling, demanding to know what is happening to her son.”
Father’s jaw tightened.
“Of course she is,” he said. “Helen will try to twist this, lie about it, turn it into something else. That is how she operates. But this time, she has no room to maneuver.”
He turned back to me.
“Elena, there is something you need to understand. The Langford Group—the company they run—is deeply in debt. They married you hoping to get access to your inheritance and your trust fund. They planned to drain your assets, then discard you when they were done.”
I closed my eyes, feeling a wave of nausea.
“It was never about love.”
“It was never about anything but survival for them,” he said. “But now, the tables have turned. If they go to prison, their company collapses. If they try to fight, we have the power to take it from them completely.”
My mind raced.
“Are you saying we should take over Langford Group?”
“I am saying we should take control of what they have mismanaged,” he replied. “Not for revenge, but to make sure they never have the means to hurt anyone again. And to secure a future for you and your child.”
That night, as I drifted off to sleep, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.
A text appeared from an unknown number.
*You think you won tonight? You have no idea who you are dealing with. We will fix this. And you will regret bringing your father into this.*
I showed it to Father.
He read it and handed it back without a flicker of emotion.
“Let them send their threats,” he said. “Every word they write is just more evidence against them.”

But as I lay there in the dark, I felt a cold knot in my stomach.
If Helen was already moving to cover it up, this was only the beginning.
