Chapter 6

The psych evaluation was scheduled for the next week.
I went.
I answered every question.
I did not hide my anger.
I did not hide my fear.
I told the truth.
About the night they threw me out.
About the hands on me.
About the fear for my daughter.
The doctor listened.
She took notes.
She did not smile.
At the end she said, “You are not unstable, Elena. You are a mother who was attacked. That is different.”
I thanked her.
I left.
I knew Helen’s team would try to twist the report.
They always did.
But I had the recording of the session.
Just in case.
Marcus called as I was getting in the car.
“The board member caved. He admitted Daniel approached him. He is out. Your father replaced him with someone loyal.”
I nodded.
One less threat.
But the damage was done.
Daniel knew about the shares now.
He would use it.
At the next hearing.
Or in the media.
I drove back to the safe house.
Lily was with the nanny.
I held her for an hour.
Then I put her down.
I opened the laptop.
I checked the share numbers.
Still growing.
Quietly.
Patiently.
My father had helped accelerate it.
Without anyone knowing.
At 3 p.m. Sarah called.
“Elena. Helen just filed a police report. She is claiming you threatened her at the hospital. That you said you would make her disappear.”
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Another move.
“Did she have proof?”
“No. But the report is public now. It will be in the news by tonight.”
I opened my eyes.
I looked at Lily.
Sleeping.
Safe.
“Release the hospital security footage,” I said.
“The one that shows her taking the photo. The one that shows her smiling while I held my daughter.”
Sarah was quiet.
Then she said, “That will destroy her in the court of public opinion.”
“Good,” I said.
“Do it.”
I hung up.
I walked to the window.
The city was gray.
Rain coming.
I placed my hand on the glass.
They wanted to paint me as the villain.
I would show them who the real villains were.
Piece by piece.
At 7 p.m. the footage hit the news.
Helen at the hospital.
Smiling.
Taking photos of Lily while I stood between them.
The comments changed again.
People calling her out.
Calling Daniel out.
His mother went silent.
His sister called me.
Crying.
“I am so sorry. I should have done more sooner.”
I told her it was okay.
That she was helping now.
That was enough.
At 9 p.m. Daniel called my regular phone.
I answered.
“Elena,” he said.
His voice was different.
Tired.
Scared.
“Stop this. Please. Before it gets worse.”
I laughed.
A small sound.
“Worse than you hitting me while I was pregnant? Worse than letting her slap me?”
He was quiet.
Then he said, “Helen is… she is not who I thought. She is pushing for things I do not want. The custody. The lies. I just want to see my daughter.”
I felt something twist in my chest.
Not pity.
Not forgiveness.
Just clarity.
“You chose her,” I said.
“Every single time.”
I hung up.
I blocked the number.
I walked to Lily’s crib.
She was awake.
Looking at me.
I picked her up.
I held her close.
“Your father is learning what happens when you choose wrong,” I whispered.
She made a small sound.
I kissed her head.
At midnight Marcus called.
“The judge dismissed the new police report. No evidence. The footage helped.”
I closed my eyes.
Relief.
Small.
But real.
“We are winning,” Marcus said.
“Not yet,” I said.
“But we are closer.”
I hung up.
I sat in the dark with Lily.
She fell asleep on my chest.
I did not move.
I let her sleep.
I thought about the next move.
The acquisition was almost complete.
My father had called in favors.
The board was almost mine.
Daniel knew.
Helen knew.
They were desperate.
Desperate people made mistakes.
I was ready for the mistake.
I closed my eyes.
I slept with Lily on my chest.
For the first time in months I dreamed of something other than fear.
I dreamed of her future.
Safe.
Loved.
Free.
When I woke the sun was up.
Lily was still there.
Still mine.
I smiled.
A real smile.
May you like
They were running out of time.
And I was just getting started.
