Story

Chapter 9

The final hearing was in three days.

Helen had fled the country.

She was in Mexico.

Hiding.

Daniel was alone.

His family had turned on him.

Even his mother.

She called me.

Crying.

Apologizing.

I accepted the apology.

I did not forgive.

Not yet.

Daniel’s sister was still on my side.

She visited Lily sometimes.

She was becoming family.

Real family.

My father came every week.

He held Lily.

He told her stories about her grandmother.

The one I barely remembered.

He was trying.

I was letting him.

The night before the hearing I could not sleep.

I walked the house.

Lily slept in her room.

Safe.

I checked the locks.

I checked the security cameras.

Everything was fine.

I sat in the living room.

I looked at the photo on the wall.

Me holding Lily the day she was born.

I smiled.

A real smile.

Tomorrow it ended.

One way or another.

At 2 a.m. my phone rang.

Marcus.

Emergency.

I answered.

“Elena. Daniel tried to take Lily. He showed up at the gate with fake papers. Security stopped him. He is in custody.”

I stood up.

My heart pounding.

“Is Lily okay?”

“She is fine. She slept through it.”

I closed my eyes.

Relief.

Rage.

“He violated the order,” Marcus said.

“This is it. This is the end for him.”

I nodded even though he could not see.

“Make sure he stays in jail until the hearing.”

“Already done.”

I hung up.

I walked to Lily’s room.

I watched her sleep.

I touched her cheek.

“They tried one last time,” I whispered.

“They failed.”

I went back to the living room.

I did not sleep.

I planned the final statement.

What I would say in court.

For Lily.

For every woman they had hurt.

For myself.

At 6 a.m. I showered.

I dressed in the same navy suit.

I left Lily with the nanny.

I kissed her forehead.

“I will be back soon,” I whispered.

“With good news.”

I drove to the courthouse.

Marcus was waiting.

My father was there.

Daniel’s sister was there.

Daniel was not.

He was still in jail.

The judge entered.

The hearing began.

Marcus presented everything.

The abuse.

The lies.

The pattern with Helen.

The attempted kidnapping.

The Langford takeover.

Daniel’s attempt to use the company.

Everything.

Daniel’s lawyer tried to speak.

He had nothing.

No defense.

Only excuses.

The judge listened.

Then he spoke.

“Full custody to Elena Langford. No visitation for Daniel until he completes counseling and proves stability. Helen is banned from any contact. Permanently.”

He looked at me.

“Ms. Langford. You have shown remarkable strength. Your daughter is lucky to have you.”

I nodded.

Once.

I stood up.

I walked out.

The cameras were there.

I did not speak.

I got in the car.

I drove home.

Lily was waiting.

I picked her up.

I held her tight.

I cried.

For the first time in months.

Happy tears.

Safe tears.

She was mine.

Completely.

Forever.

My father called.

He came over.

He held Lily.

He looked at me.

“You did it,” he said.

I nodded.

“We did it.”

He smiled.

Small.

Real.

Daniel’s sister came.

She brought flowers.

She hugged me.

She held Lily.

She cried too.

We were a family now.

The one I chose.

The one that chose me back.

At 8 p.m. Sarah called.

“Helen was arrested at the airport in Mexico. Trying to board a flight to Europe. She had fake documents. She is being extradited.”

I closed my eyes.

Justice.

Slow.

But coming.

I hung up.

I looked at Lily.

She was playing on the floor.

Happy.

Loved.

Safe.

I picked her up.

I spun her.

She laughed.

I laughed.

May you like

The war was over.

We had won.
