Chapter 7

The next hearing was in ten days.
Helen and Daniel filed three more motions.
All dismissed.
The judge was losing patience.
Marcus was smiling more.
My father called every day.
Updating me on the board.
The shares.
The quiet takeover.
It was almost done.
Ninety-two percent.
Two more days and I would control Langford Group.
Completely.
Daniel tried one last thing.
He leaked the share information to the media.
“Elena Langford is secretly trying to take over her father’s company while fighting for custody. Is this about revenge or money?”
The story exploded.
For one day.
Then my father held a press conference.
He stood at the podium.
He looked old.
But strong.
“My daughter is protecting her child. She is also protecting this company. From people who would use it for their own gain. I support her. Fully.”
The stock went up.
The story changed.
Helen posted another video.
Crying again.
It got fewer views.
People were tired of the lies.
Daniel’s sister testified again.
This time in a deposition.
She told everything.
The planning.
The manipulation.
The night they threw me out.
She cried on the stand.
I did not.
I sat beside Marcus.
Strong.
Because I had to be.
For Lily.
After the deposition Daniel called again.
From a new number.
I answered.
“Elena. Please. I made a mistake. Helen… she is dangerous. She has been blackmailing me. She has photos. From before. Of me with other women. She said she would ruin me if I did not help her.”
I listened.
I did not speak.
“I never wanted to hurt you,” he said.
His voice broke.
“I just wanted out. But she would not let me.”
I thought about the night he hit me.
The night he let her slap me.
The months of lies.
“I do not care,” I said.
My voice was ice.
“You chose. Now live with it.”
I hung up.
I blocked the new number.
I went home to Lily.
She was sitting up now.
Almost seven months.
Smiling when she saw me.
I picked her up.
I spun her gently.
She laughed.
The sound filled the room.
I laughed with her.
For the first time in almost a year.
Real laughter.
Marcus called that night.
“The judge wants to see us tomorrow. Emergency session. Helen filed one more motion. They are claiming you are using company resources to fight the custody battle. Conflict of interest.”
I smiled.
Cold.
“They are desperate.”
“Yes. But we are ready.”
I hung up.
I looked at Lily.
She was playing with a toy.
Happy.
Safe.
“They are about to lose,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
She smiled.
Like she knew.
The next morning I dressed in a navy suit.
I left Lily with the nanny.
I walked into the courtroom.
Helen and Daniel were there.
Helen looked tired.
Daniel looked broken.
The judge entered.
He looked at Helen’s lawyer.
“I have reviewed your motion. It is denied. There is no evidence of conflict. In fact, there is evidence of the opposite. Ms. Langford has been transparent about her assets from the beginning.”
Helen stood up.
Her face red.
“You are biased!”
The judge banged the gavel.
“Order. One more outburst and you will be removed.”
Helen sat down.
Shaking.
The judge looked at me.
“Ms. Langford. I am awarding you full temporary custody. Visitation for the father is supervised only. One hour per week. At a facility. No Helen.”
I nodded.
Once.
Daniel put his head in his hands.
Helen stared at me.
Pure hate.
The judge continued.
“Final hearing in sixty days. I suggest you both prepare for a long battle. Or a settlement.”
He stood.
He left.
I stood.
I walked out.
Marcus followed.
Outside Helen screamed at the cameras.
Daniel walked away.
Alone.
I got in the car.
I called the nanny.
Lily was fine.
I drove home.
When I got there Lily was waiting.
She reached for me.
I picked her up.
I held her tight.
“We won today,” I whispered.
She babbled.
Happy sounds.
I kissed her cheek.
At 6 p.m. my father called.
“The last shares cleared. You control Langford Group. One hundred percent.”
I closed my eyes.
Relief.
Power.
Safety.
For Lily.
“Thank you,” I said.
He was quiet.
Then he said, “I am proud of you. I should have said it sooner.”
I did not cry.
But my throat tightened.
“Come meet your granddaughter,” I said.
“Properly.”
He said he would.
Tomorrow.
I hung up.
I looked at Lily.
She was chewing on a toy.
I smiled.
A real smile.
Full.
“They lost the company today,” I whispered.
“They do not know it yet.”
I picked up the secret phone.
I sent one message to Marcus.
Release it. All of it.
The Langford takeover.
The board statements.
The proof that Daniel tried to use the company against me.
Marcus answered.
You sure?
Yes.
I put the phone down.
I picked up Lily.
I danced with her in the living room.
She laughed.
I laughed.
For the first time I felt free.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But closer.
The final hearing was in sixty days.
Helen and Daniel had sixty days to surrender.
May you like
Or lose everything.
I was ready either way.
