Chapter 3

The next morning I woke up to my phone buzzing nonstop.
Family members.
Friends.
People I hadn’t heard from in months.
All of them had seen Isla’s latest post.
She had posted from a hotel room, eyes red, looking devastated.
“Daniel and I have been thrown out. Sophia found out about us and kicked us to the street while she’s pregnant. I’m heartbroken for the baby. Please pray for us.”
The comments were already flooding in.
Some people defended me.
Most didn’t.
They said I was overreacting.
They said pregnant women get emotional.
They said Daniel deserved a chance to explain.
I turned my phone off.
My father was already in the kitchen making coffee when I came downstairs.
He had stayed the night in the guest room.
“Helen called me,” he said.
Helen.
Isla’s best friend.
Of course she was involved.
“What did she want?”
“She wanted to know if you were ‘okay.’ Said Isla is worried about you and the baby. Asked if she could come over and talk.”
I poured myself a glass of water.
“Tell her no. And block her number.”
My father nodded.
“I already did.”
We sat at the kitchen table.
I told him about the family business shares I had kept separate.
About the investments I had made quietly over the years.
About how Daniel only knew about the joint accounts and the house.
My father listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he reached across the table and took my hand.
“You’ve always been smarter than you let on,” he said. “Your mother would be proud.”
I felt my throat tighten.
Mom had died five years ago.
She had never liked Daniel either.
“I want everything protected,” I said. “The baby. The assets. The company shares. Especially anything tied to the Langford acquisition.”
My father’s expression sharpened.
“Daniel knows about Langford?”
“He knows we have interest in it. He doesn’t know how much control I actually have.”
My father leaned back.
“Good. Keep it that way. I’ll have the lawyers draw up new trusts this week. Everything goes to the baby. Daniel gets nothing.”
I nodded.
That afternoon I had another prenatal appointment.
The doctor checked the baby’s heartbeat.
Strong.
Steady.
I closed my eyes and listened to the sound.
After the appointment I went home and sat in the nursery I had started putting together.
The crib was half-assembled.
I finished putting it together myself.
Every screw I tightened felt like I was building something permanent.
Something Daniel and Isla could never touch.
That evening Helen posted another video.
This time she was with Daniel and Isla at the hotel.
Daniel looked exhausted.
Isla looked fragile.
Helen spoke for them.
“Sophia has cut Daniel off from his own child. She’s refusing to let him be involved. This isn’t right. The baby needs her father.”
I watched it once.
Then I screenshotted it and sent it to my lawyer.
“Add this to the evidence file,” I wrote. “They’re already trying to paint me as unstable.”
My lawyer replied within minutes.
“Already on it. We’re filing for full custody and a gag order tomorrow. They won’t be able to post anything else without consequences.”
I put the phone down.
The baby kicked again.
I placed my hand there.
“They’re lying about us,” I whispered. “But we’re going to be fine. Mommy is going to make sure of it.”
That night I couldn’t sleep.
I walked through the house checking every lock.
The new security system was armed.
No one could get in.
Still, I kept seeing Isla’s face in my bed.
Seeing Daniel’s wedding ring on the nightstand.
Seeing that cold smile.
I went back to the nursery and sat in the rocking chair.
I rocked slowly, one hand on my belly.
“I don’t know how we got here,” I said to the baby. “But I promise you this. You will never feel unwanted. You will never feel unsafe. And you will never have to wonder if your mother fought for you.”
The baby moved in response.
I stayed in the chair until the sun came up.
By morning I felt different.
Stronger.
Clearer.
Daniel and Isla had tried to destroy me while I was at my most vulnerable.
They failed.
Now it was my turn.
And I wasn’t going to stop until my daughter was safe.
Until every lie was exposed.
Until they understood exactly who they had tried to break.
I stood up from the rocking chair.
My back ached.
My feet were swollen.
But my mind was sharp.
I picked up my phone and called my father.
“Start the process,” I said. “Full protection. Full custody. And I want fraud charges filed against both of them. What they did wasn’t just cheating. It was a calculated plan to steal from a pregnant woman.”
My father didn’t hesitate.
“Consider it done.”
I hung up and walked to the window.
The sun was rising over the backyard.
A new day.
A new fight.
But this time, I wasn’t fighting alone.
I had my father.
I had my lawyers.
I had the truth.
And I had my daughter.

Daniel and Isla had no idea what was coming.
But they were about to find out.
