Story

Chapter 10

Six months later, Elena took her first steps in the living room of our new house.

I had bought it after the trial.

A place with a big backyard.

A nursery with windows that let in the morning light.

A security system that made me feel safe.

My father helped me move in.

He came over almost every weekend now.

Sometimes he brought my aunt or cousins.

The ones who had chosen us.

The ones who had believed me.

Elena loved them all.

She was a happy baby.

Curious.

Strong.

She had my eyes and Daniel’s smile.

But she would never know him.

Not the way he was.

She would only know the story I chose to tell her when she was old enough.

That her father made mistakes.

That he hurt her mother.

That he chose wrong.

And that her mother chose her.

Every single day.

That morning, after Elena’s steps, I sat on the back porch with my father while she played in the grass.

My father looked at me.

“You’re doing a good job,” he said. “With her. With everything.”

I smiled.

“I’m trying.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“Daniel’s appeal was denied. He’s serving the full sentence. Isla too. Helen’s probation is almost over, but the restraining order is permanent.”

I nodded.

I had stopped checking.

Stopped caring.

They were part of a past I had left behind.

My father looked at Elena.

“She’s going to be okay,” he said. “Because of you.”

I watched my daughter chase a butterfly.

She laughed when she fell.

Then she got back up.

Just like I had.

“I hope so,” I said. “That’s all I want. For her to be okay. To be safe. To know she was loved from the very beginning.”

My father reached over and squeezed my hand.

“She knows.”

That evening, after Elena was asleep, I sat in her room and watched her breathe.

The house was quiet.

Peaceful.

Mine.

I thought about everything that had happened.

The night I found Isla in my bed.

The DNA results.

The way Daniel’s face had gone white.

The way Isla’s smile had disappeared.

And everything that came after.

The lies.

The legal battles.

The fear.

The strength.

I had been broken.

But I had rebuilt.

For her.

I stood up and walked to the window.

The backyard was dark.

But I could see the outline of the trees.

The new life we had built.

I placed my hand on the glass.

“We made it,” I whispered. “You and me. We made it.”

Behind me, Elena stirred in her sleep.

I turned and looked at her.

My daughter.

My reason.

My everything.

Daniel and Isla had tried to destroy us.

They failed.

Because I had fought.

Because my father had stood beside me.

Because the truth had won.

And because love was stronger than any lie they could tell.

I walked over and kissed Elena’s forehead.

Then I turned off the light and left the room.

The house was still.

Safe.

Home.

I went to my own room and lay down.

For the first time in a long time, I didn’t check the locks.

I didn’t worry about tomorrow.

I just closed my eyes.

And slept.

Because we had won.

May you like

All of us.

And the future was finally, finally ours.
