Chapter 6

The fraud charges were filed the next morning.
Daniel and Isla were both served.
Helen was named as a co-conspirator.
The news spread fast.
This time, the headlines weren’t kind to them.
“Pregnant Wife Files Fraud Charges Against Husband and Fake Sister”
“Ex-Girlfriend Posed as Adopted Sister in Elaborate Scheme”
Isla posted one last desperate video before the gag order fully kicked in.
She looked directly at the camera.
“Sophia is lying. Daniel and I are in love. We never meant to hurt anyone. She’s using her family’s money to destroy us.”
The comments were mixed.
Some people still believed her.
Most didn’t.
The story was too strange.
Too calculated.
Too cruel.
My father came over that afternoon.
He brought documents.
“The Langford acquisition is almost complete,” he said. “Daniel tried one more time to insert himself through a back channel. We documented everything. It’s going into the fraud case.”
I nodded.
Good.
Every lie they told.
Every manipulation.
Every attempt to reach my assets.
It was all being recorded.
That evening I had dinner with my father at the apartment.
We didn’t talk about Daniel or Isla.
We talked about the baby.
Names.
Nursery themes.
What kind of mother I wanted to be.
It felt normal.
For a little while.
After he left, I sat in the rocking chair and read baby books until my eyes grew heavy.
I was almost asleep when my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost didn’t answer.
But something made me.
It was Isla.
Her voice was soft.
Almost sweet.
“Sophia. Please don’t hang up.”
I stayed silent.
“I know you hate me,” she continued. “I know what we did was wrong. But Daniel… he’s falling apart. He really does love you. And the baby. He made a mistake. We both did. But we can fix this. We can be a family. You, me, Daniel, and the baby. We can make it work.”
I felt something cold move through me.
“You wore my robe,” I said quietly. “You slept in my bed. You smiled at me when I found you. And now you want to be a family?”
Isla was quiet for a moment.
Then her voice changed.
The sweetness disappeared.
“You think you can just erase us? You think your daddy’s money and lawyers can make us disappear? Daniel is the father. He has rights. And I’m not going anywhere. Ever.”
I hung up.
My hands were shaking.
I called my lawyer immediately.
“Isla just called me,” I said. “She tried to manipulate me into some twisted family arrangement. Then she threatened me.”
“Document everything,” he said. “We’ll add it to the case. And I’ll request an emergency extension on the restraining order.”
I hung up and sat in the dark.
The baby was moving.
Restless.
Like she could feel my stress.
I placed both hands on my stomach.
“It’s okay,” I whispered. “She can’t touch us. No one can.”
But the call had shaken me.
Isla wasn’t done.
Neither was Daniel.
They were getting desperate.
And desperate people do dangerous things.
I stood up and walked through the apartment again.
Checking locks.
Checking cameras.
Everything was secure.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling.
They were planning something.
I could feel it.
The next morning my father called.
“Daniel’s lawyer contacted us,” he said. “They want to settle. They’re offering to drop all claims in exchange for a financial settlement and supervised visitation.”
I laughed once, without humor.
“They think I’m going to pay them to go away?”
“Apparently.”
“Tell them no. And push the fraud charges harder. I want them to understand that what they did has consequences.”
My father was quiet for a moment.
“Are you sure, Sophia? A long legal battle while you’re pregnant… it’s a lot.”
I looked out the window at the city.
“I’m sure. They came into my home. They betrayed me while I was carrying their child. They tried to steal from me. They don’t get to walk away with money and visitation like nothing happened. They need to pay.”
My father sighed.
“Okay. We’ll do it your way.”
After the call I sat in the rocking chair and closed my eyes.
I was tired.
So tired.
But I couldn’t stop.
Not yet.
Not until it was over.
Not until my daughter was born into a world where her father and his fake sister couldn’t reach her.
I opened my eyes and placed both hands on my belly.
“We’re almost there,” I whispered. “Just a little longer. Then it will be you and me. And no one else.”
The baby kicked.
Hard.
Like she was ready too.
I smiled.
Daniel and Isla thought they could break me.
They were wrong.
I was still standing.
And I was going to make sure they regretted ever stepping foot in my house.
May you like
Every single day.
For the rest of their lives.
