Chapter 9

The trial started two weeks after Elena was born.
I sat in the courtroom with my father beside me.
Elena was with a trusted nanny at the secure apartment.
I didn’t want her anywhere near this.
Daniel sat across from me.
He looked older.
Tired.
Isla sat beside him.
She looked defiant.
Helen was in the back row.
She had been subpoenaed.
My lawyer presented everything.
The DNA results.
The PI letter.
The loan Daniel took out.
The attempts to access my assets.
The fake sister story.
The package Helen left.
The phone call from Isla.
The recording of Isla trying to sell information about Langford.
Witness after witness.
My father.
The bank records.
The Langford executives.
The private investigator Daniel had hired on Isla.
By the end of the third day, it was clear.
Daniel and Isla had planned everything.
They had lied.
They had stolen.
They had tried to manipulate a pregnant woman for money and access.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
When they came back, the foreman stood.
“On the charge of fraud, we find the defendants guilty.
On the charge of conspiracy to commit fraud, guilty.
On the charge of attempted theft of assets, guilty.”
Daniel’s face went white.
Isla started crying.
Helen was found guilty of aiding and abetting and harassment.
The judge sentenced them immediately.
Daniel: five years in prison, followed by probation and restitution.
Isla: four years in prison, followed by probation and restitution.
Helen: two years probation and a permanent restraining order.
After the verdict, I walked out of the courtroom without looking back.
My father followed.
Outside, the sun was bright.
I took a deep breath.
It was over.
Finally over.
My father put an arm around my shoulders.
“You did it,” he said.
I nodded.
But I didn’t feel victorious.
I felt tired.
So tired.
I just wanted to go home to Elena.
That night I held my daughter in the rocking chair and cried for the first time since the trial began.
She slept against my chest, completely unaware of everything that had happened.
I kissed the top of her head.
“We won,” I whispered. “They can’t hurt us anymore. They can’t touch you. You’re safe. You’re loved. And you always will be.”
She stirred but didn’t wake.
I rocked her slowly.
The city lights twinkled outside the window.
I thought about everything that had led us here.
The lies.
The betrayal.
The fear.
And the strength I had found because of her.
I had been six months pregnant when my husband brought his fake sister into our home.
I had been vulnerable.
Scared.
Betrayed.
But I had fought.
For her.
And I had won.
Daniel and Isla were gone.
Helen was gone.
The family business was protected.
The Langford acquisition had closed successfully while I was in the hospital.
My daughter was safe.
And I was still standing.
I closed my eyes and held Elena tighter.
This was the ending they never expected.
Not the broken pregnant woman they had tried to destroy.
But a mother who had fought for her child and won.
I kissed Elena’s forehead again.
“Mommy loves you,” I whispered. “More than anything. And I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure you know it.”
She slept on.
Peaceful.
Safe.
May you like
Loved.
And that was all I had ever wanted.
