Chapter 6

Nora finally lost control.

She turned to me with pure hatred in her eyes.

“You bitch,” she hissed. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? You’ve ruined everything!”

I looked at her without any emotion.

“I didn’t ruin anything, Nora. I just stopped protecting the lies you and Julian built.”

She took a step toward me, but the bailiff immediately moved between us.

Julian grabbed her arm roughly.

“Nora, stop,” he muttered under his breath.

She yanked her arm away from him.

“No! This is all her fault! If she had just signed the papers and disappeared like we planned—”

She stopped abruptly, realizing too late what she had just admitted out loud.

The judge’s eyes narrowed dangerously.

“Ms. Bennett,” she said in a dangerously calm voice, “would you like to explain what you meant by ‘like we planned’?”

Nora looked at Julian in panic.

Julian wouldn’t meet her eyes.

In that single moment, their perfect image completely shattered in front of everyone.

The powerful businessman and his elegant mistress were nothing more than two selfish, cowardly people who had tried to destroy me for their own convenience. And now the entire courtroom could see it clearly.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only a deep, quiet sense of closure.
