Chapter 9

Two weeks later, Julian tried to settle.
Through his lawyer, he offered me a large sum of money and full custody in exchange for my silence. He wanted me to sign a strict NDA and disappear from his life completely.
I refused.
I didn’t want his money as a bribe.
I wanted justice.
At the final hearing, the judge ruled in my favor on almost every major point. I was granted full legal and physical custody of our unborn child, a substantial financial settlement, and Julian was issued a permanent restraining order.
As we left the courtroom for the last time, Julian looked at me with empty, defeated eyes.
“You’ve destroyed me,” he said quietly.
I stopped and looked at him.
“No, Julian,” I replied. “You destroyed yourself. I just stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own actions.”
He had nothing left to say.
Nora had already disappeared from his life weeks earlier. The woman who had helped him try to destroy me had abandoned him the moment things became difficult.
I walked out of the courthouse with my head held high.
I was no longer Iris Vance, the broken and silent wife.
May you like
I was Iris Carter again.
And I was finally, truly free.
