Chapter 12

By afternoon, my phone started blowing up with messages.

Some were from distant relatives who had been at the wedding. Most of them were shocked by what they saw. A few were supportive. But many were… not.

One message from David’s aunt stood out:

“You should be ashamed of yourself for causing such a scene at Rachel’s wedding. Margaret is an old woman. You should have handled it privately instead of humiliating her in front of everyone.”

I stared at the message for a long time before deleting it.

Another cousin wrote:

“David has always been a good son. Maybe you should try to be a better wife instead of running to a lawyer.”

I put my phone down and took a deep breath.

This was exactly what I had been afraid of.

Margaret had spent years building an image of herself as the perfect mother and grandmother. David had always backed her up. Now that the truth was coming out in public, people were choosing sides — and most of them were choosing the version of the story they were more comfortable with.

The version where I was the dramatic, ungrateful wife who blew everything out of proportion.

Rachel saw my face and took the phone from my hand.

“Don’t read them,” she said. “People who weren’t there have no right to judge. And the people who were there know what really happened.”

I nodded, but the words still stung.

Later that evening, David’s mother called me from a new number. I didn’t answer, but she left a voicemail.

Her voice was cold and controlled.

“You think you’ve won something by embarrassing us in public? You have no idea what you’ve started, Julia. David may be soft, but I’m not. If you go through with this, you will regret it. I will make sure you and that child have nothing.”

I deleted the voicemail without replying.

But her words stayed with me.

Margaret wasn’t going to go down quietly.

She was going to fight.

And she was going to use every weapon she had — money, influence, and lies.

I looked over at Mia, who was quietly drawing at the kitchen table.

For a second, fear gripped my chest.

What if I couldn’t protect her?

What if Margaret really did have the power to take everything away?

Then I remembered the way Mia had looked at me last night when David slapped me. The fear and confusion in her eyes.

And I made a decision.

I wasn’t going to let fear win anymore.

Margaret could threaten all she wanted.

This time, I was going to fight back.
