Chapter 20

One year after that terrible night at the wedding, Mia and I celebrated her ninth birthday in our little apartment.

There were balloons, cake, and five of her new friends from school. Rachel came, along with Elena and her daughter. We sang songs, played games, and laughed until our stomachs hurt.

Mia was glowing.

After everyone left, she curled up next to me on the couch with her new art set and rested her head on my shoulder.

“Mama,” she said sleepily, “this was the best birthday ever.”

I kissed the top of her head.

“I’m so glad, baby.”

She was quiet for a moment.

“Do you think Daddy will ever come back?” she asked.

I thought carefully before answering.

“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “But no matter what, you and I will always be okay. We have each other. And that’s enough.”

Mia nodded.

“I like our life now,” she said. “It’s quiet. And safe.”

I smiled, tears stinging my eyes.

“Me too, sweetheart. Me too.”

Later that night, after Mia fell asleep, I stood on our small balcony and looked out at the city lights.

I had lost so much.

But I had also built something beautiful from the ashes.

A safe home.

A peaceful life.

A daughter who felt loved and protected every single day.

I had walked through fire.

And I had come out the other side stronger.

I was no longer the woman who stayed silent.

I was no longer the woman who made excuses.

I was Julia.

A mother.

May you like

A survivor.

And finally, finally free.
