Chapter 18

The divorce was finalized eight months after the wedding.

David didn’t fight as hard as I expected in the end. Maybe he was tired. Maybe Margaret finally realized she couldn’t win. Or maybe he simply didn’t care enough to keep trying.

We agreed on joint legal custody, but Mia would live with me full-time. David was granted supervised visitation twice a month. He rarely used it.

Margaret was completely cut off. The judge had issued a permanent restraining order against her after she tried to contact Mia through a third party.

On the day the divorce was final, I sat in my new apartment — a small two-bedroom place I had managed to rent with help from Elena and some savings I had secretly built up over the past few months.

Mia was in her room, happily arranging her books on the new shelf we had bought together.

I looked around at our little home.

It wasn’t big. It wasn’t fancy. But it was ours.

No one could come in uninvited. No one could criticize how I raised my daughter. No one could hurt us anymore.

I had lost a lot.

I had lost my marriage.

I had lost the family I thought I had.

I had lost financial security.

I had lost friends who chose to believe Margaret’s lies.

But I had gained so much more.

I had gained my voice.

I had gained my freedom.

I had gained peace.

And most importantly, I had gained a daughter who no longer had to be afraid in her own home.

That night, after Mia fell asleep, I stood in the doorway of her room and watched her for a long time.

She looked peaceful.

Safe.

Loved.

And that was all that mattered.
