Chapter 10

Later that afternoon, Elena called me.

“I’ve already started drafting the paperwork,” she said. “But I need you to be completely honest with me. Has David ever been physically violent with you before last night?”

I hesitated.

“No,” I said. “Last night was the first time he hit me. But… there were other things.”

“Like what?”

I took a deep breath.

“He’s never hit me before, but he’s grabbed me hard enough to leave bruises. He’s thrown things. He’s punched walls when he was angry. And he’s used his size to intimidate me more times than I can count.”

Elena was quiet for a moment.

“What about emotional abuse?” she asked. “Has he ever isolated you from friends or family? Controlled the finances? Made you feel worthless?”

I let out a shaky laugh.

“All of the above.”

I told her everything.

How David had slowly encouraged me to stop working after Mia was born. How he gave me an allowance instead of access to our joint accounts. How he would get angry if I spent time with friends without him. How he would side with Margaret every single time there was a conflict, no matter how wrong she was.

I told her about the times he would disappear for hours after an argument, leaving me alone with Mia and his mother’s cruelty.

Elena listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she said, “Julia, what you’re describing is a pattern of coercive control. It’s not just one bad night. This has been going on for years.”

I closed my eyes.

Hearing it said out loud made it feel more real.

“I stayed because I thought it would get better,” I admitted. “I thought if I just loved him enough, he would eventually choose me over his mother.”

Elena’s voice was gentle but firm.

“Abusers don’t change because you love them more. They change when they decide to change. And from everything you’ve told me, David has no interest in changing.”

I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me.

“So what happens now?” I asked.

“Now we build the strongest case possible,” Elena said. “We document everything. We gather evidence. And we make sure you and Mia are protected.”

I looked over at Mia, who was sitting on the living room floor drawing quietly.

For the first time in years, I felt like I was finally doing the right thing.

Even if it was terrifying.

Even if it meant burning my old life to the ground.

Because the life I had been living wasn’t worth saving.

It was time to build something new.

May you like

Something safe.

Something that belonged only to me and my daughter.
