Chapter 5

By the next morning, the story had already spread across social media and local news.

Clips from the hotel’s security footage had somehow leaked. People were sharing the moment Preston slipped the phone into Sophie’s jacket, followed by the brutal swing of the menu board. The comments were brutal.

Many people couldn’t believe a grown man would do something like that to a child — especially his own niece.

Evelyn sat in the hospital cafeteria with a cup of coffee she hadn’t touched, scrolling through her phone. Rachel, the bride, had already called her twice to apologize and check on Sophie. Even some of the wedding guests had reached out, expressing shock and support.

But Evelyn wasn’t interested in sympathy right now.

She was thinking about what came next.

When the police had questioned her at the hospital the night before, she had given them a full statement. She had also mentioned that this wasn’t the first time Preston had been cruel to Sophie. There had been other incidents over the years — verbal abuse, intimidation, and once, he had locked Sophie in a room during a family gathering because she “wouldn’t stop crying.”

The officers had taken notes seriously.

Preston was currently in custody. His new wife had already distanced herself publicly, releasing a statement saying she had no idea about his behavior and was “deeply shocked.”

Evelyn didn’t believe her for a second.

Later that afternoon, while Sophie was resting, Evelyn received a call from her lawyer.

“Evelyn,” he said, “I’ve already spoken with the district attorney. Given the video evidence and Sophie’s age, they’re moving forward with charges. Assault on a minor, false reporting, and evidence tampering. It’s a strong case.”

Evelyn closed her eyes in relief.

“What about custody or protection?” she asked.

“We can file for a restraining order immediately,” her lawyer replied. “Given what happened, it should be granted without issue. Preston won’t be allowed anywhere near you or Sophie.”

Evelyn nodded, even though he couldn’t see her.

“Thank you.”

After the call ended, she sat in silence for a while, watching her daughter sleep.

For years, she had endured Preston’s arrogance and cruelty because he was family. She had told herself it wasn’t worth making waves. She had tried to keep the peace for Sophie’s sake.

But last night had changed everything.

Preston had shown everyone exactly who he was.

And now, there would be consequences.

Real ones.

Evelyn reached over and gently held Sophie’s hand.

“We’re going to be okay,” she whispered. “I promise you, baby. No one is ever going to hurt you like that again.”
