Chapter 6

Preston Whitmore was officially charged the next morning.
The charges were serious: assault on a minor, filing a false police report, and attempting to tamper with evidence. Because the incident was caught clearly on hotel surveillance and witnessed by over a hundred people, the district attorney moved quickly.
Evelyn received the news while sitting beside Sophie’s hospital bed. Her lawyer called her directly.
“Preston was denied bail,” he told her. “Given the nature of the assault and the fact that it was committed against a child, the judge considered him a flight risk and a potential danger.”
Evelyn closed her eyes and let out a slow breath.
For the first time since the wedding, she felt like she could finally relax her shoulders.
Sophie stirred in the bed and opened her eyes.
“Mommy?” she asked sleepily. “Is Uncle Preston still in jail?”
Evelyn reached over and gently brushed her daughter’s hair back.
“Yes, baby. He’s in jail. And he’s going to stay there for a while.”
Sophie was quiet for a moment, then asked in a small voice, “Are you sure he won’t come back?”
Evelyn leaned down and kissed her forehead, being careful around the bandage.
“I’m sure,” she said firmly. “He can’t come near you anymore. The police and the judge made sure of that.”
Sophie seemed to relax a little after hearing that. She closed her eyes again, but her small hand stayed wrapped around Evelyn’s fingers.
Later that afternoon, Evelyn stepped out into the hallway to take another call. This time, it was from Rachel, the bride.
“Evelyn, I’m so sorry,” Rachel said, her voice thick with guilt. “I had no idea Preston was capable of something like that. If I had known…”
“It’s not your fault,” Evelyn replied gently. “You couldn’t have predicted what he would do.”
Rachel was quiet for a few seconds before speaking again.
“Some of the family are saying they want to visit Sophie. My parents… and a few others. They feel terrible about what happened.”
Evelyn hesitated.
Part of her wanted to say no. She didn’t trust anyone from that side of the family right now. But another part of her knew that not everyone had been cruel to Sophie.
“Only if Sophie wants to see them,” she finally said. “And only with me there. I’m not leaving her alone with anyone.”
“I understand,” Rachel replied. “I’ll let them know.”
After the call ended, Evelyn stood in the hallway for a while, staring out the window.
Her life had completely changed in less than forty-eight hours.
Preston was in jail.
The family that once looked down on her was now divided and scrambling.
And for the first time in years, she felt like she was finally in control of her own life.

But she also knew this was only the beginning.
The real fight — both legally and emotionally — was still ahead.
