Chapter 7
The news of Preston’s arrest spread through the Whitmore family like wildfire.
Some members were in complete denial. Others were horrified. A few tried to downplay what happened, saying things like “Preston was drunk” or “Sophie must have provoked him somehow.”
But none of them could argue with the video.
The security footage had been shared among family members, and even the most loyal ones couldn’t defend what they saw. Watching Preston calmly slip his phone into an eight-year-old’s pocket, then violently swing a heavy wooden board at her head, was something no one could excuse.
Preston’s parents, who had always protected and spoiled him, were now silent. They didn’t visit him in jail. They didn’t release any public statements. They simply withdrew from everything.
Even his new wife filed for an annulment within three days, claiming she had been “deceived” about his character.
Preston was completely alone.
Evelyn heard all of this through Rachel and a few other relatives who reached out to apologize. She didn’t feel joy hearing about his isolation. But she did feel a sense of justice.
For years, Preston had used his family name and wealth to get away with treating people badly — especially Sophie and herself. Now, when he needed them the most, no one was willing to stand beside him.
One afternoon, while Sophie was napping, Evelyn received a message from Preston’s mother. It was short and cold:
“We would like to speak with you about Sophie. This situation has gone too far.”
Evelyn stared at the message for a long time before replying:
“Sophie is recovering. When she is ready, and only if she wants to, we can discuss a supervised meeting. Until then, please respect our space.”
She didn’t expect a reply.
And she didn’t get one.
That night, as she sat beside Sophie’s hospital bed, Evelyn realized something important.
For the first time in years, she wasn’t afraid of the Whitmore family.
She wasn’t afraid of Preston.
