Chapter 10

Three months later, Evelyn and Sophie moved into a small but cozy apartment across the city.

It wasn’t as big or luxurious as the house they had lived in before, but it was theirs. The walls were painted in soft colors Sophie had chosen. There was a little reading nook by the window and a small balcony where they could watch the sunset together.

Preston had been sentenced to three years in prison after accepting a plea deal. His reputation was destroyed, and most of his former business associates wanted nothing to do with him. Evelyn had been granted full custody of Sophie with no visitation rights for Preston.

Life was quieter now.

Some days were still hard. Sophie occasionally had nightmares, and Evelyn sometimes woke up anxious, worried that something would go wrong again. But those moments became less frequent as time passed.

One evening, as they sat together on the balcony, Sophie asked a question Evelyn had been expecting.

“Mommy, do you think we’ll ever see Uncle Preston again?”

Evelyn thought carefully before answering.

“Maybe one day, when you’re much older, if you want to,” she said. “But only if it’s something you choose. Not because anyone makes you.”

Sophie nodded, seeming satisfied with that answer.

Then she leaned her head against Evelyn’s shoulder.

“I like our new home,” she said. “It feels safe.”

Evelyn smiled and kissed the top of her head.

“It is safe. And it’s ours.”

As the sun set over the city, Evelyn looked out at the skyline and felt a deep sense of peace she hadn’t experienced in years.

She had lost a lot.

Her marriage.

Her old life.

Her trust in many people she once considered family.

But she had gained something far more valuable.

A safe home for her daughter.

The courage to stand up for herself.

And the knowledge that she was strong enough to protect what mattered most.

The accident at the wedding had been terrible.

But it had also been the moment everything finally changed for the better.

And as she sat there with Sophie beside her, Evelyn knew one thing for certain:

They were going to be okay.

Not because life was perfect.

But because they had each other.

And that was more than enough.
