Chapter 18 - The Photos That Spoke Louder

Maya called me one evening.

“I’ve been looking at everything you sent,” she said. “The photos of the glasses, the timeline, the messages from Lauren, the CPS report… it’s strong. Really strong.”

I sat on the edge of my bed, phone pressed to my ear.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means if you want to go further — if you want to pursue this legally — you have a very good case. Not just for what happened that night, but for the ongoing emotional abuse and the false CPS report.”

I was quiet for a moment.

“I don’t want money,” I said. “I just want Grace to be safe. And I want Lauren to stop.”

Maya was quiet too.

“Then we document everything and let the consequences come naturally,” she said. “Sometimes the best revenge is simply refusing to let them get away with it.”

After the call, I opened the folder on my laptop again.

I looked at the photos of the broken glasses one more time.

They were just objects. But to me, they had become something else.

They were proof.

Proof that I hadn’t imagined it.

Proof that Grace hadn’t exaggerated.

Proof that what happened mattered.

I closed the laptop and went to Grace’s room.

She was already asleep, one arm hugging her stuffed bear.

I stood there watching her breathe.

Then I whispered, so quietly only I could hear:

May you like

“I’m going to make sure no one ever hurts you like that again.”

And for the first time, I actually believed I could.
