Chapter 20 - The Truth About the “Respect Lessons”

Grace had another nightmare that night.

She woke up crying, calling for me. When I rushed into her room, she was sitting up in bed, breathing hard.

“I dreamed Aunt Lauren took my glasses again,” she sobbed. “And this time you weren’t there.”

I climbed into bed with her and held her until she stopped shaking.

After she calmed down, she stayed quiet for a while, her head on my chest.

Then she said something that broke my heart.

“Mom… Aunt Lauren used to say those ‘respect lessons’ even before that night. She said if I didn’t learn to listen, she would have to teach me the hard way. She said you let me get away with too much because you feel bad that Dad left.”

I went very still.

Grace continued, her voice small.

“She said that’s why I’m weak. Because you’re weak too.”

I closed my eyes and held her tighter.

For a long time, I couldn’t speak.

When I finally did, my voice was rough.

“Grace, listen to me. You are not weak. And neither am I. What Lauren did — what she said — was never about teaching you anything. It was about control. It was about making herself feel powerful by making you feel small. That is not love. That is not family. That is abuse.”

Grace was quiet.

Then she whispered, “I don’t think she loves me.”

My heart cracked.

“Maybe not,” I said honestly. “But I do. More than anything. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure you know that.”

Grace nodded against my chest.

We stayed like that until she fell back asleep.

I didn’t move for a long time after.

I just held my daughter and made a silent promise.

Lauren had spent years chipping away at Grace’s sense of safety and worth.

I was going to spend however long it took building it back.

And I was going to make sure Lauren never got the chance to break her again.
