Chapter 24 - What Lauren Lost

Lauren’s life unraveled faster than I expected.
Within a month, two of her biggest clients pulled their accounts after hearing rumors about the investigation. Her husband started working longer hours and barely spoke to her. Her own children began asking questions she couldn’t answer.
She stopped posting on social media.
The perfect image she had spent years building was gone.
One afternoon, I received an unexpected message from her.
Lauren: I never meant for it to go this far. I was just trying to help Grace. Can we please talk?
I stared at the message for a long time.
Then I deleted it without replying.
Two days later, she showed up at my building.
Security called me from the lobby. I went down but didn’t let her inside.
Lauren looked exhausted. Her eyes were red.
“Erin,” she said. “Please. I just want to see Grace. I want to explain.”
I shook my head.
“You had years to explain,” I said. “You chose to hurt her instead. You don’t get to see her now because you’re sorry you got caught.”
Lauren’s face twisted.
“You’re turning her against me,” she hissed.
“No,” I said calmly. “You did that yourself.”
I turned and walked back inside.
When I got upstairs, Grace was waiting by the door.
“Was that Aunt Lauren?” she asked.
“Yes.”
Grace was quiet for a moment.
“Did she say sorry?”
I knelt down in front of her.
“She said some things,” I answered honestly. “But it doesn’t matter. You don’t owe her anything. Not your time. Not your forgiveness. Not even your attention.”
Grace nodded slowly.
Then she said something that surprised me.
“I don’t hate her,” she said. “But I don’t want her in my life anymore.”
I pulled her into a hug.
“Then that’s what we’ll do,” I said. “We’ll build a life without her.”
Grace rested her head on my shoulder.
May you like
“Okay,” she whispered.
And for the first time, I believed we could.
