Chapter 27 - The New Glasses

Three months later, Grace got a new pair of glasses.
They were purple — her favorite color. The frames were lighter and more comfortable than the old ones. When she put them on for the first time, she grinned at her reflection in the mirror.
“I look like a superhero,” she said.
I laughed. “You are a superhero.”
She turned to me, suddenly serious.
“Mom,” she said, “can we do something with the old glasses?”
I knew what she meant.
We took the broken pair to a small park near our apartment. Grace carried the box the whole way. When we reached a quiet spot under a tree, she opened it and looked at the twisted frames one last time.
Then she closed the box and handed it to me.
“I don’t want to keep them,” she said. “But I don’t want to throw them away either. Can we bury them?”
We found a soft patch of earth and dug a small hole together. Grace placed the box inside, and I covered it with dirt. She picked a small rock and placed it on top like a marker.
We stood there for a moment in silence.
Then Grace said, “I’m not scared of them anymore.”
I put my arm around her shoulders.
“I know you’re not,” I said. “And I’m so proud of you.”
We walked home hand in hand.
