Chapter 23 - The Final Confrontation

Two weeks later, we had a meeting.

Not in a courtroom — not yet — but in a neutral conference room with Maya present, along with a mediator and my parents.

Lauren refused to come at first. But when Maya made it clear that we had enough evidence to involve the police and child services more seriously, she showed up.

She looked thinner. Her usual polished appearance was slightly frayed.

The meeting was tense from the start.

Lauren denied everything. She called Grace a liar. She accused me of coaching her. She even tried to bring up old arguments from our childhood to paint me as unstable.

I didn’t raise my voice.

I simply opened my folder and laid out the evidence one by one.

Photos of the broken glasses.

Grace’s written timeline.

Screenshots of Lauren’s messages.

The CPS report.

Statements from Grace’s teacher.

By the time I finished, the room was quiet.

Lauren’s face had gone pale.

My mother looked down at the table. My father wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Finally, the mediator spoke.

“Given the evidence and Grace’s consistent statements, it would be in everyone’s best interest to agree to supervised contact only — and only if Grace wants it.”

Lauren stood up abruptly.

“This is bullshit,” she snapped. “You’re all being manipulated by Erin.”

She stormed out of the room.

My mother started to cry quietly.

I didn’t feel triumphant.

I just felt tired.

But when I got home and told Grace what happened, she looked at me with something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Relief.

“She can’t hurt me anymore?” she asked.

“Not the way she used to,” I said. “Not if we don’t let her.”

Grace nodded.

Then she climbed into my lap like she used to when she was smaller and whispered, “Thank you, Mom.”

I held her tightly and didn’t let go for a long time.
