Chapter 4

Elena placed the first document on the judge’s bench.
“These are bank records showing multiple large transfers from joint accounts into a private account under Ms. Olivia Bennett’s name. The transfers began shortly after Ms. Carter became pregnant.”
Daniel’s lawyer stood up quickly.
“Your Honor, these are private financial matters between consenting adults. This has nothing to do with the divorce.”
Elena smiled politely.
“Actually, it has everything to do with it. Because these transfers were made without Ms. Carter’s knowledge or consent. In other words — marital assets were being stolen.”
The judge looked at Daniel.
“Is this true, Mr. Carter?”
Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it. For the first time, he looked unsure.
Olivia leaned over and whispered something to him, but he didn’t respond.
Elena continued.
“We also have text messages and emails between Mr. Carter and Ms. Bennett discussing how they would handle custody once the child was born. In one particular message, Ms. Bennett wrote, and I quote: ‘Once the baby is here, we can fight for full custody. She won’t be able to handle it alone anyway.’”
A murmur ran through the small courtroom.
I kept my eyes on Daniel.
He finally looked at me. There was no more confidence in his face. Only panic.
The judge turned to me.
“Ms. Carter, is there anything you would like to add at this time?”
I stood up slowly, one hand still resting on my stomach.
“Yes, Your Honor,” I said clearly. “I would like to present something that might help clarify my husband’s true intentions.”
I nodded at Elena.
She opened another folder.
This one contained something much more damaging.

And Daniel knew it the moment he saw it.
His face went completely white.
