Chapter 9

Daniel lost almost everything.

His reputation at work took a massive hit after the recordings became part of public record. Several clients pulled their accounts. His company launched an internal investigation into the financial irregularities Elena had uncovered.

Olivia disappeared from Chicago not long after the final hearing. Rumor had it she moved to another state. I didn’t care enough to find out.

The woman who had once smiled at me like she had already won ended up with nothing.

No Daniel.

No money.

No future with the man she had tried to steal.

As for Daniel… he tried to reach out once, through his lawyer. He wanted to negotiate visitation terms. I refused. The court had already decided, and I had no interest in making things easier for him.

The only thing I allowed was a letter.

He sent it through Elena.

In it, he wrote that he was sorry. That he had been weak. That he had let his mother and Olivia influence him too much. He said he wanted to be part of the baby’s life.

I read the letter once, then burned it.

I didn’t hate him anymore.

But I also didn’t trust him.

And I would never again put my child in a position where someone could hurt them the way he had allowed his mother — and himself — to hurt me.

Some bridges, once burned, should stay that way.
