Chapter 10

Six months later, I stood in that same garden.

The sun was warm on my face.

Sarah came out and put an arm around my shoulders.

“Look at how far you’ve come,” she said softly.

I looked at the flowers.

Bright, tall, beautiful.

Just like Leo.

“I miss him every single day,” I said. “But I don’t feel broken anymore.”

Mark had moved to another city.

He kept to himself now.

He’d never tried to contact me again.

Justice hadn’t brought my son back.

But it had given me peace.

It had given me back my pride.

It had proven that the truth always wins.

I took a deep breath.

“I used to think I’d never be happy again,” I said. “But I know Leo would want me to keep going. He’d want me to be brave.”

Sarah squeezed my hand.

“He’d be so proud of you.”

I looked up at the blue sky.

Somewhere up there, I knew Leo was smiling.

He knew I’d fought for him.

He knew I’d never stop loving him.

And I knew that no matter what happened, I was safe.

I was loved.

And I was finally, truly free.
