Chapter 9

Word spread fast.

Family and friends who’d believed Mark reached out to apologize.

“I can’t believe we trusted him,” my aunt said. “You were always the kind one. He was always hiding something.”

Even Mark’s own brother called me.

“I’m so sorry,” he said. “I tried to tell him to answer your calls that night. He said you were just panicking over nothing. I had no idea…”

It hurt to hear that, but it also helped.

People knew the truth now.

Mark had nowhere left to hide.

He lost his job when his company found out what he’d done.

Investors pulled out of his projects.

He sold the apartment and the gifts to pay back the money.

Everything he’d built on lies crumbled to dust.

Elena and I stayed in touch.

We became friends, bound by the same painful lesson.

She said she’d never trust someone who kept secrets again.

Neither would I.

Slowly, I started to heal.

I planted a small garden in Sarah’s backyard.

I filled it with Leo’s favorite flowers—sunflowers and daisies.

Every morning I watered them.

Every bloom felt like a little hug from my boy.

I started going to a support group for grieving parents.

For the first time, I didn’t feel like I was going crazy.

I felt understood.

I felt seen.

I realized that even though Leo was gone, his love stayed with me.

It was stronger than any lie.

Stronger than any betrayal.
